Feng Shu is a Chinese artist from Beijing who produces detailed skull and insect sculptures made from intricate hand-painted ceramic and steel.

Life and work

Shu was born in Beijing, China in 1981. He studied sculpture at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts for both his Bachelor of Fine Arts (2005) and Masters of Fine Arts (2009).

An artist in the 1980s generation of Chinese artists, his detailed painted ceramic and steel skulls and insects [1] [2] [3] have been released in the “Beautiful Bugs Series.” In an interview, Shu stated his inspiration comes from growing up as an only child because of the one-child policy in China, "so it was a little lonely and boring. As a child, I was always outside looking for insects to play with." [4]

His works have been shown worldwide at F2 Gallery (Fabien Fryns Fine Art), [5] The Opposite House Beijing, [6] and CIGE. [7] They have been sold at international auctions and are in major collections. [8]

In 2010 Feng Shu completed an installation at the Tai Wai MTR Station in Hong Kong. [9] His work was shown at Art14 in London in 2014. [10]

He lives and works in Beijing.

The Central Academy of Fine Arts or CAFA is an art academy managed by the Ministry of Education of China. The Manila Bulletin calls the school "China’s most prestigious and renowned art academy". It is considered one of the most selective schools in the country and turns away more than 90% of its applicants each year.

Caochangdi was an urban village and renowned arts district located in the Chaoyang District of northeast Beijing at the intersection of the 5th Ring Road and Airport Expressway. Translated as "grasslands" in Mandarin, Caochangdi was home to a diverse group of residents, including migrant workers, farmers, students and artists, most notably, Ai Weiwei. Caochangdi developed into a thriving arts and cultural hub when artists began to move into the area around 2000, attracting international attention similar to the nearby 798 Art Zone. Demolition of the village began in July 2018.

Jiang Shuo is a Chinese contemporary sculptor.

Sheng Qi is a Chinese performance artist and painter. He was one of the original founders of the Chinese performance art group, Concept 21. Sheng Qi graduated from Beijing Academy of Art and Design in 1988. In 1989, in protest to the massacre at Tiananmen Square, he chopped off the little finger on his left hand and buried it in a porcelain flowerpot, which remained in Beijing during his subsequent exile in Europe.

Wu Weishan is Curator of the National Art Museum of China, Vice-Chairman of the China Artists Association, President of the Chinese Academy of Sculpture and Director of the Academy of Fine Arts at Nanjing University. Wu has been actively promoting Chinese art on the world stage and has made great contribution to the international cultural exchange of China. He was awarded the First Award for Person of the Year in Art of P.R.C. in 2014 by RRC and was granted the title of “Artists with High Moral Virtue and Artistic Achievements of China” in 2015 and “Goodwill Ambassador for China Voices” by the State Council Information Office, P.R.C. in 2016.

Park Seo-bo painter

Park Seo-bo is a Korean painter, part of the first generation of modern artists in South Korea. He has been a prolific painter well known for his 'French: Ecriture' paintings, and has been one of the most influential figures in modern Korean art history. He is now widely considered the godfather of Dansaekhwa originated in South Korea in 1970s.

F2 Gallery was a contemporary art gallery in Beijing, China founded by art dealer Fabien Fryns. Established in 2005, the gallery is located in the Caochangdi Art District and has held exhibitions by both Western and Chinese contemporary artists, including Henry Hudson (artist) Sheng Qi, Wu Junyong and Zeng Fanzhi. The gallery's first opening included the high-profile artists Julian Schnabel and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Fabien Fryns is a Belgian art dealer and collector, residing in Beijing since 2004. He has worked in the art world since 1986, specializing in contemporary Chinese art since 2000.

Han Yajuan, also spelled Han Ya Juan is a Chinese contemporary artist. She currently lives and works in Beijing. Han Yajuan ranks seventh on the all-time list of artists who have grossed the most money at auction before their 30th birthday.

Kirsten Lillian Abrahamson is a Canadian ceramic artist.

Chen Man is a Chinese visual artist. Her medium includes photography, graphic design, cinematography, and digital art.

Zheng Lu (郑路) is an artist based in Beijing. Zheng Lu studied at Lu Xun Fine art Academy from 1998-2003 before continuing to Beijing's prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2004 until 2007. While still in school Zheng won the LVMH Prize which provided the artist with three months training at The École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, ENSBA, Paris. Zheng has mainly produced sculpture and installation work with steel structure, and also two-dimensional, multimedia, stage and public art.

Cui Xiuwen was a Chinese artist who made oil paintings, as well as video and photo works. Cui was a well-known contemporary artist in China. Her works have been collected by museums such as Tate Modern and the Brooklyn Museum.

Lu Xinjian is a Chinese born contemporary artist known for producing paintings, sculpture, graphic art and design.

Richard Hudson is a British Sculptor whose organic sculptures are shown internationally and collected widely.

Chen Fei, born in 1983, Hong Tong, Shanxi Province, China, was trained at the Beijing Film Academy, and in 2005, was graduated from Fine Arts Department. His passion for and extensive knowledge of movies has influenced his choice of subjects and compositional style in his paintings.

Mary Lum is a visual artist whose paintings, collages and works on paper reference the urban environment, architectural forms and systems.
