Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra (FYCO) is an artistic and educational organization in the San Francisco Bay Area. Providing performances with traditional Chinese instruments mainly in Silicon Valley, FYCO is a subordinate of Aimusic School, a US government awarded educational institute.
FYCO was founded in 2000 by Gordon Lee along with thirteen musicians. FYCO currently has five groups, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and FYCO, with about one hundred musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments. Most of them are American born Chinese youths ranging from nine to seventeen years of age.
In the past few years, FYCO's concerts have received praises from audiences, including arts organization observers. Arts Council Silicon Valley describes FYCO as a "local treasure." [1] The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) declared FYCO as "one of the very few ensembles in the United States dedicated to educating young people, their families and communities through traditional Chinese music, and is carrying out its mission with great success." FYCO's mission is to promote Chinese music as an integral part of Chinese-American culture by training young musicians to play traditional instruments, thereby strengthening the Chinese community and enhancing the cultural diversity and richness of American society. FYCO has been awarded grants by government arts agencies and foundations, and been featured on newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, including CCTV (China Central Television), Hong Kong Phoenix TV, KTSF (CH26), KICU (CH36), NBC, and KQED-TV (CH9).
In 2004, FYCO was invited by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China to visit three of China's top conservatories of music, and they performed joint concerts with each of the conservatories. FYCO is the first Chinese orchestra from Western countries to perform in China.
In July 2013, FYCO visited Taiwan on their second cultural exchange. They performed in the 2013 Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival, as well as joint performances with local orchestras, and visited schools in Taiwan.
In July 2016, FYCO visited Yunnan on a cultural exchange tour. They performed joint concerts with local orchestras and colleges, and visited schools and art institutes in Yunnan.
Music of China refers to the music of the Chinese people, which may be the music of the Han Chinese as well as other ethnic minorities within mainland China. It also includes music produced by people of Chinese origin in some territories outside mainland China using traditional Chinese instruments or in the Chinese language. It covers a highly diverse range of music from the traditional to the modern.
The New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) is a private music school in Boston, Massachusetts. It is the oldest independent music conservatory in the United States. The conservatory is located on Huntington Avenue of the Arts near Boston Symphony Hall and is home to 750 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies along with 1400 more in its Preparatory School as well as the School of Continuing Education. At the collegiate level, NEC offers the Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts, as well as the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Artist Diplomas. Also offered are five-year joint double-degree programs with Harvard University and Tufts University.
The Central Conservatory of Music is a prestigious leading music school of China. Its campus is in the Xicheng District of Beijing, China, near Fuxingmen Station. It is a Chinese Ministry of Education Double First Class Discipline University, with double First Class status in certain disciplines.
The Shanghai Conservatory of Music was founded on November 27, 1927 as the first music institution of higher education in China. Its teachers and students have won awards at home and abroad, thus earning the conservatory the name "the cradle of musicians."

The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is a non-profit youth orchestra located in San Jose, California.
The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, commonly known as the ASYO, is an organization featuring Atlanta's young instrumentalists, created in 1974. Every September, about 650 middle to high school instrumentalists go through one or more auditions for places in the ASYO. Only about 120 will be selected to participate in the season.
The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, INC. (PCC) is a tax-exempt, non-profit educational and cultural organization. It was founded in 1966 by members of Musicians' Protective Union Local #274, American Federation of Musicians. Local #274 was chartered in 1935 as a separate Black local because Black musicians were denied membership in the racially segregated Local #77. Local #274 enjoyed its autonomy for more than 36 years. It was the longest surviving independent Black Musicians' Union in the United States, of the more than fifty chartered in major cities.
Singapore Chinese Orchestra SCO, is Singapore’s only professional Chinese orchestra. Inaugurated in 1997, the 85-musician orchestra took on the twin role of preserving traditional arts and culture and establishing new frontiers through the incorporation of Nanyang music elements in its repertoire.
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra
Since its founding in 1977, the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestras provide student musicians with a thorough classical music and orchestral education while offering audiences concerts of music ranging from well-loved symphonies to cutting edge contemporary works. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, four ensembles comprise the GBYO, the full-sized symphonic Youth Orchestra, the intermediate-level Concert Orchestra, and the beginning-level Sinfonia and Sinfonietta ensembles. GBYO also offers a "Bridges" program, providing entry-level instruction to underserved youth in the city. The GBYO ensembles are in residence at Loyola College in Maryland.
The North Carolina Symphony is an American orchestra based in Raleigh, North Carolina, with sixty-six full-time musicians. The orchestra performs in Meymandi Concert Hall and performs occasionally with the Carolina Ballet and the Opera Company of North Carolina. In 2017–18, the organization celebrated its 85th anniversary season. Concert series are also performed across North Carolina in the cities of, Chapel Hill, Cary, Southern Pines, New Bern, Wilmington, and Fayetteville, among others.
The Beigang International Music Festival is a project of the "Beigang Philharmonic Association" and takes place in Beigang, Yunlin County, Taiwan. Since its inception in 2006, the festival has grown and developed to become the biggest international music festival in Yunlin County. The festival has a series of concerts, mostly wind music, and an educational program within the "Chia-Hu Conservatory". The festival also organizes an intercultural program for musicians from different countries. The Artistic director of the Beigang International Music Festival is the pianist Heinz Chen.
The Sault Symphony Orchestra is a Canadian/American orchestra with offices in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Its primary performance venues include the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre and Central United Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral and the Soo Theatre in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. An average concert season consists of 4 to 6 concerts, plus a year-end fundraising event called Beer, Bratwurst and Beethoven. The Music Director and Conductor of the Sault Symphony is John Wilkinson.
Mark Kosower is principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra and is on the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He was solo cellist of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany from 2006 to 2010 and was Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2005 to 2007.
The China National Traditional Orchestra (CNTO) is a 110-piece orchestra of traditional Chinese musical instruments with an accompanying folk choir. Founded in Beijing, China in 1960, the orchestra is a state-level (national) performing arts institution directly administered and endorsed by China's Ministry of Culture (MOC). Its mission is to promote and advance China's musical heritage. CNTO is part of a cultural exchange program called Image China and the orchestra is managed by the China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG).

Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra is a chamber orchestra composed of eleven classically trained musicians, who interpret elements of Chinese folk music. The intention of the group is to express the changes taking place in contemporary Chinese culture, through the sounds of ancient instruments. It has participated in important national and international music events held in Brisbane, Canberra, Wellington, Christchurch.
Chen Xi Yao is a Chinese-born classical musician. He is an award-winning guzheng player and pianist. He currently lives in Beijing but spent a number of years in New Zealand.
