FirstPEX is a private electronic market for private equity transactions based in Switzerland.

History

The platform was founded by Patrick Gruhn in 2011. [1] At the time of its launch, it was compared to the American SecondMarket. [2] Through a partnership with UK-based Autumn Capital Partners the platform was expanded outside of Switzerland to the rest of Europe. [3] The platform was not subject to the regulatory supervision by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA); however it was subject to authorization in Europe. [4]

The company was dissolved in 2016. [5]

Features

The site required users to purchase a paid membership in order to trade. [6] It allows qualified investors to buy and sell equities in privately owned to each other through a bidding process which enables the parties to find a mutually agreeable price. [7] [8] The site's primary userbase was made up of entrepreneurs, investors and business owners, in which negotiations and the exchange of information on investment transactions is covered prior to closing transactions. [8]

The site also allowed users to trade in non-liquid assets. [3] The site was based on the Django web framework, and had functionality to navigate through listings according to various of criteria such as asset class, investment volume, country of origin, sector and industry. Its features also included a live chat and a data room for the secure sharing of files.

Given the absence of established trading markets for these interests, the transfer of interests in private-equity funds as well as hedge funds can be more complex and labor-intensive.

Liongate Capital Management was a global investment management firm, focused on creating and managing fund of hedge fund investments for institutional and private investors. Liongate, founded in 2003 by Jeff Holland, Ben Funk and Randall Dillard, managed a range of funds of hedge funds in both commingled funds and tailored, single client portfolios. The firm, which at it peak managed over USD 3 billion with an additional USD 4 billion in assets under advisory, had a global reach with offices in London, New York, Zurich, Dubai, Malta and Mumbai. The Liongate partners sold the firm to Principal Financial Group in 2013 as the large US insurer and asset manager wanted a hedge fund research platform in order to quickly ramp up retail hedge fund distribution in the US.

AlpInvest Partners is a Dutch global private equity asset manager with over $85 billion of committed capital since inception as of December 31, 2022. The firm invests on behalf of more than 450 institutional investors from North America, Asia, Europe, South America and Africa.
