Andy Hinds at AllMusic gave Five two stars out of five, describing it as sounding much like its three predecessors ( Introspection , Uncertain Terms and Parallax ). He praised Howe for his "incomprehensibly fast soloing and impeccable note choice" and bassist Kevin Vecchione for his "great enthusiasm brought to the table", but remarked that the album may be "Predictable or dependable, depending on your point of view." Gregory Howe is an American guitarist and composer. An active musician for almost four decades, he has released nine studio albums in addition to collaborating with a wide variety of artists.
Greg Howe is the self-titled first studio album by guitarist Greg Howe, released in 1988 by Shrapnel Records. Prior to its recording, Howe had sent a demo tape to Shrapnel founder Mike Varney in 1987, after which he was signed to the label.

Ascend is the sixth studio album by guitarist Greg Howe, released on May 4, 1999 through Shrapnel Records. According to Howe, this is his least favourite album due in part to creative differences which arose with keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij during the making of the latter's 1997 album High Definition. In the liner notes, Howe explains his decision to revisit the neoclassical style of his earlier work, however clarifying that "by no means is this a reflection of where I'm headed with my music in the future." The fifth track, "La Villa Strangiato", is a cover of an instrumental by progressive rock band Rush, from their 1978 album Hemispheres.
