Dragons RFC are one of the four professional rugby union regional teams in Wales. They are owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and play their home games at Rodney Parade, Newport. They play in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup/European Rugby Challenge Cup. The region they represent covers an area of southeast Wales including Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen with a total population approaching 600,000 and they are affiliated with a number of semi-professional and amateur clubs throughout the area, including Pontypool RFC, Caerphilly RFC, Cross Keys RFC, Ebbw Vale RFC and Newport RFC.

Pontypool Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in the town of Pontypool, which plays in the WRU SUPER RYGBI CYMRU league. Since the regionalisation of Welsh rugby in 2003, Pontypool RFC is now a feeder club to the Dragons regional team. Pontypool play their home matches at Pontypool Park. Their traditional home kit is a red, white and black-hooped shirt and socks with white shorts, although they did gradually shift to wearing black shorts post-2003.

Lyn Jones is a Wales international rugby union former player. Originally playing as a flanker, Jones subsequently became a coach. He played most of his playing career for Neath RFC and started his coaching career at the same club. Jones has coached professional clubs in Wales and England and, in 2018, became head coach of the Russian national rugby union team. He subsequently became a coach with national rugby team of the Netherlands.

Abercarn Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Abercarn near the city of Newport. They currently play in the Welsh Rugby Union Division 2 having been relegated in two consecutive seasons; from Division 3 East in 2007 and Division 4 East in 2008. The club then immediately gained promotion back to Division 4 East in 2009 and then gained promotion back to Div 3 in 2012, winning the Swalec Bowl in 2010 along the way. Abercarn RFC is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons.
Cardiff Saracens Rugby Football Club was formed in 1966 when two of rugby clubs in Cardiff, Wales, amalgamated. The former clubs were Roath Park RFC and Spillers RFC. The 'Sarries', as they are known locally, play in black shirts with red piping, black shorts and black socks.
The Welsh Rugby Union Specsavers Division One East is a rugby union league in Wales. It was 'born' out of a restructure of the former league system that had formally begun in Wales for the 1990/91 season. As a result of the restructure of 2006, the WRU decided to divide the then Division One into two leagues, East and West, and Division 1 East was implemented and became a regular part of the fixture list. In 2014, another restructure of Welsh Rugby's league system saw more changes within the Division One tier. This introduced an additional 2 leagues at this level bringing the total number of Division 1 leagues up to 4. Each league comprises 12 teams and combined the 48 clubs from the old Divisions One and Two with Clubs being placed into the corresponding league table based on their geographic location. The four leagues that currently make up the Division 1 level are as follows: Division One East, Division One East Central, Division One West Central and Division One West.

Matt McLean is a recently retired Welsh rugby union player who played for Worthing Raiders in National League 2 South and East. Known for both his try scoring and kicking prowess, as of the end of the 2022/23 season, his last before retirement, Matt was the most prolific points scorer in National League 2 South and National League 2 East history with over 3,000 points scored for Worthing, including three seasons as the division's top points scorer, as well as being the division's 2nd highest try scorer of all-time with 173 tries. A former Wales youth international, he has also represented his country in rugby sevens.
