Flights are an English alternative/progressive rock band formed in May 2010 in Bristol. The band comprises Joel Pearce on vocals/guitars, Joe Newcombe on guitars/vocals, Dean Bowden on bass/vocals and Adam Cann on drums.

In describing their music, Cann has said "We’ve fallen into progressive rock – soundscapy too I think.” [1] Flights cite their primary influences as Oceansize, Radiohead, Reuben and Yourcodenameis:milo. [1] Flights have also described their style as "Some big guitars, some pretty guitars, irregular time signatures, harmonised vocals and a whole lotta groove." [2]

History

Formation

Joe Newcombe, Adam Cann and Joel Pearce come from Thornbury, a market town in South Gloucestershire approximately 12 miles (19 km) north of Bristol. From age 13, Newcombe and Cann had played together in various bands (Cradle Of Fluff, Alcoholic Spider). They met Pearce (then a member of Enigma Design) while playing in pubs in the Thornbury region. When Newcombe went to university he met Dean Bowden and subsequently Newcombe, Bowden and Cann went on to play together in a band called Just For Hustlers. Deciding they wanted to try something different, they then recruited Pearce (who had discussed starting a band with Cann during Friday drinking sessions) and thus completed the Flights line-up. [1] Flights played their first gig in a small Bristol venue called The Louisiana debuting the tracks "Charity Calendars" and "The Mapmaker" among others. [1]

2010 - 2011 (first EP)

For the majority of 2010 Flights divided their time between touring and writing sessions. [3]

In September 2010, Flights recorded their debut EP Flights at Outhouse Studios in Reading. The six tracks comprising Flights were engineered, produced and mixed by James Billinge assisted by Tom Hollister. Also present behind the desk was Outhouse Studios head John Mitchell (It Bites, Kino, Frost* and Arena). The EP's artwork was designed by Bristol freelance graphic designer Nic Bennett. [4]

On 28 January 2011 the band announced the launch of their website. [5]

On 27 April 2011 the band launched a YouTube video for "The Pretence", the lead track on Flights. The video was directed by Bristol photographer Alex Gregory. [6]

The Flights EP was released on 30 May 2011 via iTunes and the band's store. [1]

On 3 June 2011 the band announced the availability of "Judge", the second track from Flights, on YouTube. The video accompanying the song was a static shot of the EP's artwork. [1]

On 17 June 2011 the band announced the release of the free download single "Wires & Code" from Flights. The release was accompanied by a video which was again directed by Alex Gregory. [1] The band also relaunched their website on the same day. [1]

On 18 August 2011 the band announced the availability of Flights through Bandcamp. [1]

Throughout 2011 Flights continued to tour regularly whilst also finding time for album writing sessions. [1]

On 19 December 2011 the band announced the availability of their version of the Christmas song "Carol Of The Bells". The video was viewable at the Kerrang website and the track was available for free download through the file sharing site musicglue. [7]

2012

2012 saw the continuation of live dates and writing/recording sessions. [1]

On 1 May 2012 Flights announced a YouTube trailer video for forthcoming music. [5]

On 21 May 2012 Flights announced that a new single, "Eleven", would be released in June on Scylla Records. [8]

2014

On 6 October 2014 the 'History Be Kind' studio album was released on Scylla Records on vinyl. Later added to the Scylla Bandcamp on 9 February 2016

Reuben were an English three-piece musical group from Camberley, Surrey. Their music is a fusion of alternative rock and heavy metal, as their songs cover a variety of styles, ranging from heavy and upbeat, such as their 2005 single "Blamethrower" to slower, more melodic songs such as their 2004 single "Moving to Blackwater". The former style of song often featured vocalist Jamie Lenman switching between shouting and whispering, a technique often used in heavy metal and post-hardcore music. The band performed in the UK underground music scene. Although they attracted a significant fanbase, Reuben never achieved mainstream success, but did chart four songs in the UK Singles Chart. Their highest charting single was 2004's "Freddy Kreuger", that reached UK No. 53.

Bullet for My Valentine, often abbreviated as BFMV, are a Welsh heavy metal band from Bridgend, formed in 1998. The band is currently composed of Matthew Tuck, Michael Paget, Jason Bowld (drums) and Jamie Mathias (bass). Former members include Michael Thomas, Jason James and Nick Crandle; the latter were on bass. They were formed under the name Jeff Killed John and started their music career by covering songs by Metallica and Nirvana. Jeff Killed John recorded six songs which were not released; two of these tracks were reworked later in their career as Bullet for My Valentine. A change of style from that of Jeff Killed John led the band to change their name. In 2002, the band secured a five-album deal with Sony BMG. The band has stated that their music is influenced by classic metal acts such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Slayer. The band is part of the Cardiff music scene.

Enter Shikari are a British rock band formed in St Albans in 1999 by bassist Chris Batten, lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds, and drummer Rob Rolfe. In 2003, guitarist Rory Clewlow joined the band to complete its current line-up, and it adopted its current name. In 2006, they performed to a growing fanbase at Download Festival as well as a sold-out concert at the London Astoria. Their debut studio album, Take to the Skies, was released in 2007 and reached number 4 in the Official UK Album Chart, and has since been certified gold in the UK. Their second, Common Dreads, was released in 2009 and debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number 16; while their third, A Flash Flood of Colour, was released in 2012 and debuted on the chart at number 4. Both have since been certified silver in the UK. The band spent a considerable amount of time supporting the latter release through the A Flash Flood of Colour World Tour, before beginning work on a fourth studio album, The Mindsweep, which was released in 2015. Exit Ten was an English post-hardcore/rock band with metal influences. Their debut album, Remember the Day, was released in 2008. Their second studio album, Give Me Infinity, was released in October 2011.

Kids in Glass Houses are a Welsh pop rock band from Cardiff. The band achieved success on the strength of the singles "Give Me What I Want" and "Saturday" from their debut album Smart Casual in 2008. The band released their second album Dirt in early 2010, releasing four singles, most notably "Matters at All". The band's third album, In Gold Blood, was released on 15 August 2011. Their fourth album, Peace, was released on 30 September 2013. The band announced their split in January 2014 and played their final show at Cardiff's Great Hall on 31 October 2014.
