Focused was a hardcore punk band that originated out of Long Beach, California in 1991, with a Christian hardcore style. [4] [5] The band broke up in 1996, but reunited briefly in 2009.

History

Focused began in 1991, created by Tim Mann on vocals, John Schoettler on rhythm guitar, Matt Archuletta on bass, and Jeff Boetto (No For An Answer, Half-Off), on lead guitar. [6] The band played their first song live at a local talent show without an official drummer and asked their friend David Shoemaker to fill-in for that one night. [7] The band would soon bring on Al Christensen on drums. The band played their first official show alongside bands such as Mean Season, Unbroken, and Strife. [6] The following night the band played their second official show at the Irvine Bren Events Center alongside bands such The Crucified, Mortal and Deliverance. [6] The band recorded two demos, 'Situation Within’ in 1991 and At Eternity's Gate in 1993. [8] [9]

By mid-1992, Boetto and Archuleta had left, to be replaced by Mike Merryman on lead guitar and Dirk Lemmenes on bass. Schoettler left in mid-1993 after recording At Eternity’s Gate; Jason Parker replaced him. This new line-up signed with Tooth & Nail Records, [10] and began recording their debut album, Bow, which was released as the label's second release. Shortly after the release of that album, Parker departed and Andrew Reizuch took his place on tour. Christensen left the band in 1994, and was replaced by Chris Bowden. Chris Bowden and Andrew Reizuch would be part of the new line-up to write and record their second album. [3]

In 1994, the band embarked on a tour called 40 Days and 40 Nights, alongside Chatterbox and Unashamed. They also met with Blenderhead and MxPx on that tour at a few shows. [3] The tour lasted from June 24 to July 30. [11] They toured with Bloodshed the following year, [12] and began working on their second album, The Hope That Lies Within, also released on Tooth & Nail. [3] It received an enthusiastic, ten-bar rating from Cross Rhythms. [13] In 1996, the band broke up. [3]

In 2000, Mann brought the band back together to release the three-song 2000 EP. [14] The lineup at the time consisted of new members aside from Mann, with Brett Barber and Gary Wilson on guitars, Jim Rupe (ex-Every Day Life) on bass, and Adam Valles on drums. [15]

They were asked to play on Demon Hunter's "Huntour" in 2009, along with Living Sacrifice, Throwdown, Advent and others. [16] [17] [18] [19] The classic line-up of Mann, Merryman, Parker, and Lemmenes, with former Project 86 drummer Alex Albert joining the band on drums, participated in the tour. [20]

In 2019, Steadfast Records, a record label that had released the debut Zao album, All Else Failed , announced the re-release of Focused's demo At Eternity's Gate, which would include vinyl and CDs. [9] [10]

Unashamed was a Christian hardcore punk band that became one of the founding bands in the Spirit-Filled HardCore movement. Their bold faith-based lyrics center around ideas directly lifted from the Bible and conservative morality. They released two albums on Tooth & Nail Records. After signing with Tooth & Nail, the band toured until their "final" show at Cornerstone Festival in 1998. In 2009, the band announced that they were reforming with many of their original line-up, and would begin touring hard into 2010.

The Classic Crime is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2004. The band's current lineup consists of Matt MacDonald, Alan Clark (bass), Robert "Cheeze" Negrin (guitar), and Paul "Skip" Erickson. They have released three albums and an EP on Tooth & Nail Records, two of which, The Silver Cord (2008) and Vagabonds (2010), charted in the Billboard 200. Capital Lights was an American Christian pop rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Formed in 2002 as Aftereight, the band changed its name after signing to Tooth & Nail Records in 2008. The group initially disbanded in 2009, but reunited in late 2010 until 2012.

Narcissus was an American hardcore band formed by John LaRussa and John Pope in 1998 in Canton, Ohio. In addition to John Pope and John LaRussa (guitar), who were in the band from start to finish, members included, at various times, Justin Carroll (bass), Ray Taylor, Derek Carter (percussion), Bill Wensel (percussion), Stephen Cushman (percussion) and Josh King (bass). The band was on the now-defunct label Takehold Records before joining Century Media. A few albums were re-released through Tooth & Nail. Before breaking up the band were featured on The Vans Warped tour and were getting ready to hit Europe for their international release of Crave and Collapse, which was received well overseas. They announced that they have reunited and become a band again in 2020 after John Pope and John LaRussa were offered a spot on the famous Furnace Fest, performing on day 1, September 24, 2021, along with bands Converge, Glassjaw, Killswitch Engage, Everytime I Die and many others. They performed their first show on September 11, 2021.

Mortal was a Christian industrial/dance band fronted by Jerome Fontamillas and Jyro Xhan. Both members went on to found the alternative rock group Fold Zandura, and for a time were members of both bands simultaneously. The band is known for its lyrical intelligence, incorporating advanced theology with what has been billed as "Industrial Praise and Worship." According to CCM Magazine "Mortal has had a much greater influence... on industrial music than its modest output would suggest."

Strongarm was a five-piece Christian and straight edge hardcore band, formed in Pompano Beach, Florida. They were one of the first "Spirit-Filled" hardcore bands, along with Unashamed, Overcome, Focused and Zao.

MyChildren MyBride is an American metalcore band from Madison, Alabama. The group originally signed with Solid State Records after extensive constant touring, including various dates in European countries. After spending seven years and releasing three full-length albums with Solid State, MyChildren MyBride signed with eOne/Good Fight Music.

Overcome are an American Christian metalcore band. They come from Phoenix, Arizona. The band started making music in 1993 until their decade-long hiatus from 2000 to 2010, when they commenced making music again. Tooth & Nail Records released the band's first two albums, Blessed Are the Persecuted in 1996 and When Beauty Dies in 1997. Facedown Records has released the other albums from the band signed the band. They released Immortal Until Their Work Is Done in 1999, More Than Death in 2001, The Great Campaign of Sabotage in 2011, and No Reserves. No Retreats. No Regrets. in 2013. They were one of the first "Spirit-Filled Hardcore" bands, along with Unashamed, Focused, Strongarm, and Zao. They were the first band signed to Facedown Records. The band is playing at Facedown Fest 2017.

Chatterbox also styled as CHATTERbOX was a project of the Crucified's Jeff Bellew. The project hosted many session musicians, including Stavesacre and the Crucified's Mark Salomon, and Argyle Park and Circle of Dust's Scott Albert. Bellew has also played on Argyle Park's album Misguided, along with Salomon, Dirk Lemmenes, and multiple other musicians.
