Fola Francis (18 March 1994 – 20 December 2023) was a Nigerian transgender model, LGBTQIA+ activist and entrepreneur. [1] [2] In 2022, she became the first trans model to walk the Lagos Fashion Week runway for Cute-Saint and Fruché. Her debut on the runway had ripple effects, with the Lagos Fashion Week's team deciding not to post any of her pictures. [3] [4]

Career and activism

Francis started her brand, Fola Francis, in 2018 as a way to deal with trauma from being kitoed. [5] Before then, she worked as a blogger and TV producer in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Francis constantly spoke out about trans and non-binary issues in Nigeria, and her voice was highlighted by the BBC after the cross-dressing bill was introduced in the country, which she called scary and dangerous. [2] She actively participated in the Nigerian ballroom scene as host and queen of the Lagos ballroom scene and sought to replicate the feeling of safety, community, and positive representation balls are known for. [1] [6]

In 2023, Francis appeared in her first role as an actress in 14 Years And A Day an LGBTQ+ film by Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim and Ayo Lawson. [7] She also documented her journey as a trans woman on TikTok and was popularly known for her day in the life of a trans woman living in Nigeria videos. [8]

Francis spoke on several LGBTQ+ panels, worked as an independent with several NGOs and queer organizations, and started Dolls Activities, a trans-focused initiative. [9]

Death

On 20 December 2023, Fola Francis lost her life after drowning on a visit to a beach in Lagos, Nigeria. [10] [11]

James Chukwueze Obialor, popularly known as WF James Brown, is a Nigerian internet personality, dancer, and cross dresser who was noted in 2018 following a viral video in which he said the phrase "They didn’t caught me" following an arrest by the police. Her accounts promote hate speech, homophobia, transphobia, and false claims, especially pertaining to medical care for transgender children. Libs of TikTok's social media accounts have received several temporary suspensions and a permanent suspension from TikTok.

Alex Monette Consani is an American model and influencer. She started modeling in 2015 and became the world's youngest transgender model at the time at age 12. After signing with IMG Models in 2019, she started using TikTok in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and became popular online for her comedic videos, earning over three million followers by 2024. In 2024, she was the first transgender model nominated for the Fashion Award for Model of the Year and to walk for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show along with Valentina Sampaio.

Bel Priestley is an English actress and internet personality. She began her career on the social media platforms YouTube and TikTok, where she documented her gender transition after coming out as a transgender woman. By 2023, she amassed over one million followers on TikTok. Priestly joined the cast of the second season of the British coming-of-age romantic comedy drama television series Heartstopper as the character Naomi Russell. In 2023, she appeared on the covers of Brick Magazine and Attitude.

Jay Boogie is a Nigerian transgender fashion enthusiast, brand influencer and social media personality who founded JaySecrets. She became famous on Instagram in her early twenties, with her gender transition gaining attention from Nigerians on social media platforms. Boogie has been listed among the top ten crossdressers in Nigeria alongside Bobrisky and James Brown.

Britney Manson is a Russian-Estonian model, singer, and social media personality. She started her TikTok account in 2017 and became known for her modeling videos in 2019, when she also got signed to Elite Model Management for modeling.

In September 2023, Iraqi social media personality Noor Alsaffar, known as Noor BM,, was shot three times by a gunman in the Mansour district of Baghdad, killing him.
