Food Valley is a region in the Netherlands [1] [2] where international food companies, research institutes, and Wageningen University and Research Centre are concentrated. The Food Valley area is the home of a large number of food multinationals and within the Food Valley about 15,000 professionals are active in food related sciences and technological development. Far more are involved in the manufacturing of food products. Food Valley, with the city of Wageningen as its center, is intended to form a dynamic heart of knowledge for the international food industry. [3]
Within this region, Foodvalley NL is intended to create conditions so that food manufacturers and knowledge institutes can work together in developing new and innovating food concepts.
The Food Valley as a region has been the subject of study by several human geographers. Even before the Food Valley was established as an organisation in 2004 and as a region in 2011 [4] Frank Kraak and Frits Oevering [5] made a SWOT analysis of the region using an Evolutionary economics framework and compared it with similar regions in Canada, Denmark, Italy and Sweden. A similar study was done by Floris Wieberdink. [6] The study utilised Geomarketing concepts in the WERV, the predecessor of the Regio Food Valley. Geijer and Van der Velden [7] studied the economic development of the Regio Food Valley using statistical data.
The research performed in the Food Valley has generated some discussion about the influence of culture on economic growth. Wieberdink [6] argued that culture and habitat are not spatially bounded, but historically. More recently a study about the Food Valley [8] argued that culture and habitat are in fact spatially bounded. Both studies, however, recommend the Regio Food Valley to promote its distinct culture.
Utrecht is the fourth-largest city and a municipality of the Netherlands, capital and most populous city of the province of Utrecht. It is located in the eastern corner of the Randstad conurbation, in the very centre of mainland Netherlands, about 35 km south east of the capital Amsterdam and 45 km north east of Rotterdam. It has a population of 361,966 as of 1 December 2021.
Apeldoorn is a municipality and city in the province of Gelderland in the centre of the Netherlands. It is located about 60 km east of Utrecht, 60 km west of Enschede, 25 km north of Arnhem and 35 km south of Zwolle. The municipality of Apeldoorn, including villages like Beekbergen, Loenen, Ugchelen and Hoenderloo, had a population of 165,525 on 1 December 2021. The western half of the municipality lies on the Veluwe ridge, with the eastern half in the IJssel valley.
Wageningen is a municipality and a historic city in the central Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. It is famous for Wageningen University, which specialises in life sciences. The municipality had a population of 38,774 in 2019, of which many thousands are students from over 150 countries.
Buren is a town and municipality in the Betuwe region of the Netherlands. Buren has 27,168 inhabitants as of 1 January 2022.
Druten is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. The municipality covers the eastern part of the Land van Maas en Waal region of the province of Gelderland.
Ede is a municipality and a town in the centre of the Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. As of 1 July 2021, Ede had 119,186 inhabitants.
Ermelo is a municipality and town in the Netherlands; found within Gelderland province and the forest-rich Veluwe area. The 2019 population was 26,858.
Nijkerk is a municipality and a city located in the middle of the Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland.
The Randstad is a roughly crescent-shaped conurbation in the central-western Netherlands, consisting primarily of the four largest Dutch cities ; their suburbs, and many towns in between, that all grew and merged into each other, containing almost half the country's population. Among other things, it includes the Port of Rotterdam, the Port of Amsterdam, and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. With a population of approximately 8.4 million people it is one of the largest metropolitan regions in Europe, comparable in population size to the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region or the San Francisco Bay Area, and covers an area of approximately 11,372 km2 (4,391 sq mi). The Randstad had a gross regional product of €397 billion in 2017, making it the third most productive region in the European Union, behind the Paris Region and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. It encompasses both the Amsterdam metropolitan area and Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area. It is part of the larger Blue Banana megalopolis.
The Netherlands has several levels of administrative subdivisions. The first level of subdivision consists of 12 provinces. The second level of subdivision consists of 344 municipalities.
Jan des Bouvrie was a Dutch architect, interior and product designer, best known for his 1969 "kubusbank sofa", now considered a design classic. Des Bouvrie was active as a distinguished lecturer at various design academies. The design college Jan des Bouvrie Academy, in Deventer is named in his honor.
The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is a Dutch symphony orchestra. The home of the orchestra is the Muziekcentrum in Enschede. The orchestra was previously known in Dutch as Orkest van het Oosten, but in October 2011 changed its Dutch name to align with the English name. At the same time the Dutch abbreviation "OvhO" was replaced with "NedSym." Due to objections from the Amsterdam-based Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Enschede orchestra had to change its name again and from 2014 till 2019 was known as HET Symfonieorkest. Internationally it keeps employing the name "Netherlands Symphony Orchestra".
Jona Lendering is a Dutch historian and the author of books on antiquity, Dutch history and modern management. He has an MA in history from Leiden University and an MA in Mediterranean culture from the Amsterdam Free University, taught history at the Free University, and worked as an archivist employed by the Dutch government, before becoming one of the founders of the history school Livius Onderwijs.
The area around the town of Wageningen was settled as early as the 9th century. Located on the north bank of the Nederrijn river, between the Gelderse valley and the Veluwe, a wooded, hilly, glacial moraine, by the 12th century it was part of the Duchy of Guelders, in the Holy Roman Empire. Wageningen received its city charter from Count Otto II on June 12, 1263. Today, it is in the province of Gelderland, in east-central Netherlands.
Ruud-Jan Kokke is a Dutch designer who started his career in the mid-eighties and became known for his furniture, inventive objects, interiors and designs for public space. He has received numerous nominations and awards. He is married to the visual artist and jewellery designer Petra Hartman.
Jan Luiten van Zanden is a Dutch economic historian and professor of Global Economic History at Utrecht University. He is a widely acknowledged specialist in Dutch, European and Global Economic History.
In 2019–20 season, De Graafschap played in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch professional football. They finished 2nd, but were not promoted since promotion and relegation were cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were knocked out of the KNVB Cup in the first round by Vitesse.
Jan Bieleman was a Dutch historian whose specialty was Dutch agriculture from the Middle Ages on. He is best known for his monograph Five centuries of farming: A short history of Dutch agriculture 1500-2000 (2000). From 1982 until he retired in 2012 he was a member of the Rural and Environmental History chair group at Wageningen University & Research. Bieleman was an editor for the series Techniek in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw, published by the Instituut voor Transitiestudies of the Stichting Historie der Techniek; he was responsible for the agriculture section.
Moordhuizen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Maas en Waal and is located about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Alphen. The hamlet is notable for its name, and is the location of the Quarles van Ufford pumping station.
