Footscray Cricket Club is an Australian cricket team competing in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition.
The Footscray Cricket Club was founded in 1883 and for the first 113 years of its existence was located at the Western Oval until 1996 when combined pressure exerted by the Footscray Football Club and state-government-appointed commissioners to the City of Maribyrnong saw the club relocated to the Mervyn G. Hughes Oval.[ citation needed ]
Footscray's Test representatives in order of debut are Ron Gaunt, Les Joslin, Ken Eastwood, Alan Hurst, Ray Bright, Merv Hughes, Tony Dodemaide, Colin Miller and John Hastings. The Footscray Cricket Club joined the Victorian Premier Cricket competition in 1947–48, providing players of the western suburbs of Melbourne the chance to play at the highest level of club cricket. The club was premiers in season 1979–1980 and 2013–2014.[ citation needed ]
From 2000–01 until 2003–04, the club was known as the Footscray-Victoria University Cricket Club due to a partnership with the university; then, from 2004–05 until 2016–17, the club was known as the Footscray-Edgewater Cricket Club, owing to a sponsorship deal with property developers in the suburb's Edgewater estate. Edward James Whitten Sr. OAM was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Footscray Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
The 1924 Victorian Football Association season was the 46th season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Footscray Football Club, after it defeated Williamstown by 45 points in the final on 20 September. It was the club's ninth and last VFA premiership before it, along with North Melbourne and Hawthorn, joined the Victorian Football League the following year; this marked the end of a long period of dominance for Footscray, which had seen it win five minor premierships in a row and four major premierships in six years.
The 2014 Victorian Football League season is the 133rd season of the Victorian Football Association/Victorian Football League Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Footscray Bulldogs, the reserves team of the Australian Football League's Western Bulldogs which was competing in its first season in the VFL, after it defeated Box Hill by 22 points in the Grand Final on 21 September; it was the first senior VFL premiership won by the Footscray reserves team, and it was the tenth senior VFA/VFL premiership won by the Footscray/Western Bulldogs Football Club overall.
Relocation of professional sports teams occurs when a team owner moves a team, generally from one metropolitan area to another, but occasionally between municipalities in the same conurbation. Australia and New Zealand uses a North American-style league franchise system which means the teams are overwhelmingly privately owned and therefore favours relocation practices. Owners who move a team generally do so seeking better profits, facilities, fan support, or a combination of these.
