Fortune originated as a nightclub with a very niche-oriented demographic. What was once considered the ‘hipster’ nightclub of Vancouver, Fortune hosts multiple cultural nights each week, and supports events catered towards the alt-underground community and the local scene. Fortune Sound is known for not only club nights & concerts but unique community gatherings such as art shows, pop up shops, food fairs, mental health seminars & much more. Previously, its building served as the location of the infamous Ming’s Restaurant before closure. [5]

The Station nightclub fire occurred on the evening of February 20, 2003, at The Station, a nightclub and hard rock music venue in West Warwick, Rhode Island, United States, killing 100 people and injuring 230. During a concert by the rock band Great White, a pyrotechnic display ignited flammable acoustic foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. Within six minutes, the entire building was engulfed in flames. The fire was the deadliest fireworks accident in U.S. history and the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. It was also the second-deadliest nightclub fire in New England, behind the 1942 Cocoanut Grove fire.

Though Rise's owners invested in soundproofing before it opened, noise concerns from nearby residents initially led the local community board and state liquor authority to require the venue to close at an earlier hour than its competitors. Following a contentious series of applications to modify Rise's operating schedule and liquor license, this requirement was overturned for weekend nights. The establishment has received praise for its welcoming, diverse atmosphere.
