The Forum of Indian Leftists (FOIL), or the Forum of Inquilabi Leftists, is a group of left-wing activists [1] of Indian background. The organization describes itself as "a clearinghouse for radical Indian activists in the United States, Canada and England." [2] Its purpose is described by its founders as "some place for us to share information, offer support, and encourage each other to write in the open media on issues pertaining to Indians overseas and India itself, and help build projects that make our radical politics more material." [2]

Founding and Mission

Babri Masjid was a mosque in Ayodhya, India at a site believed by Hindus to be the birthplace of Hindu deity Rama. It has been a focus of dispute between the Hindu and Muslim communities since the 18th century. The blame or the credit for the entire temple construction movement at Ayodhya is placed on the Sangh Parivar, a group in direct opposition with FOIL. Two of the co-founders of FOIL are Biju Mathew and Vijay Prashad. [4] [5] In an interview from 2005, Biju Mathew describes the founding of FOIL to Yoginder Sikand. [6] He claims, they started FOIL in 1995 following the destruction of the Babri Masjid in 1992. [7]

"We felt it was crucial to reach out to Indian students on American campuses. Now, it has expanded beyond university students as well, and we have more than 400 people on our email discussion list. We also have a website devoted to discussion of issues relating to South Asia from a leftist perspective. Besides sending out regular information through the internet we also organise groups of activists to speak on American university campuses on South Asian issues, focusing particularly on communalism and so-called 'liberalisation' of the economy." Similarly, Vijay Prashad, in an interview with Mark Nowak of Jacobin , claims that the goal of any Socialist movement, including FOIL, is to close the intellectual gap facilitated by capitalism and inequality between the intellectual and the people. [8] This clearly shows FOIL's motives are rooted in promoting social harmony in India and more generally in South Asia and abroad.

Announcing a call to join FOIL in SAMAR, or the South Asian Magazine for Action and Reflection, in the Summer/Fall 1997 Issue, Mathew and Prashad discuss various projects that FOIL has developed and how the many FOIL projects are coordinated by different members spread across the US, Canada and UK. [9]   Indeed, through its "clearing house" model, FOIL has spawned several organizations and groups in North America, Europe and India. [7]

Organizations

Mathew and Prashad also started the annual Youth Solidarity Summer Camp in New York. This was intended as a response to the summer camps organized for young Indians in America by the RSS, or the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. [10] The purpose of these camps is to bring together young South Asian students to discuss a range of issues, including, but not only, communalism and religious tolerance. Almost 300 people have attended the camps and the networks that they have created has recently led to the setting up of a national youth organization called Chingari. Chingari [ permanent dead link ] serves as a movement to empower educated Indian youth and help them with job placement. [11]

Founders

Biju Mathew

Biju Mathew is an American Marxist activist. He is an Indian immigrant and a professor of the Business Administration department at Rider University. [12] Mathew is also an organizer of New York Taxi Workers Alliance. He has published a book titled Taxi!: Cabs and Capitalism in New York City (The New Press). [13] Biju Mathew is also a member of the Board of the Brecht Forum in NYC. [14] Although the Brecht Forum closed in 2014, [15] Mathew continues to spread his ideas through a radio show he co-hosts co-hosts called "Global Movements, Urban Struggles" on WBAI 99.5 FM (NYC). [16] He has written extensively, spoken and organized around issues such as communalism, immigration, labor issues, and against the war. He lives in New York City.

Vijay Prashad

Vijay Prashad is an Indian historian and journalist born on 14 August 1967 in Kolkata, India. From 1996 to 2017, Prashad served as the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and a professor of International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. [17] Prashad is the author of 25 books ranging in topics from South Asians in America to the future of communism in India. He has written numerous articles and papers on US imperialism and capitalist hegemony and impacts of this across the world. [18] In one of his most popular pieces in The Nation , Prashad describes his vision of the progression and struggle towards Socialism. [19] He argues that socialist forces typically have very good ideas, but no power. He asserts that without power, good ideas have little consequences and claims that socialists must not simply theorize but also organize. [19] A prominent critic of leftists in the US, Mathew argued at a 2004 conference on Life After Capitalism that leftists in the United States are not as effective as they could be in situations where they win influence through community organizing, such as in local governments, because they often do not appreciate ideas originating from other parts of the world. [20]

IDRF controversy

On 20 November 2002 FOIL published a report, titled 'The Foreign Exchange of Hate IDRF and the American Funding of Hindutva', [21] accusing the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), an organization which raised money in the United States, of funding hate. The report is described as a 'careful study and analysis of more than 150 pieces of documentary evidence, almost three-quarters of which are those published by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS.' [21]

Separated into multiple parts, it begins by claiming the IDRF was supporting Hindutva, or the extremist Hindu ideology which has caused much of the violence between religious groups in India recently [22] and has seen tremendous growth, much of which the RSS is responsible for, outside India over the last two decades. [23] "The Foreign Exchange of Hate" asserts that the IDRF in fact has religious ties and serves as a major monetary sponsor for Hindutva organizations in India.

The authors of the report investigated the sending of money to Indian movements that participated in the attacks of Muslims in Gujarat, India in 2002. The report details donations to anti-Muslim organizations such as the RSS. [24] In an interview in 2002, Mathew claims he and the other FOIL members are in clear opposition to all forms of right-wing religious fundamentalist and obscurantist groups. [14] Mathew states, "If there are petrodollars coming into India to fund radical Islamist groups, that needs to be investigated and stopped." [6]

The report was termed as misleading Marxist propaganda by IDRF who later published a report of their own [25] [26] responding to the charges leveled by FOIL.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is an Indian right-wing, Hindu nationalist volunteer paramilitary organisation. It is the progenitor and leader of a large body of organisations called the Sangh Parivar, which has developed a presence in all facets of Indian society and includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, the ruling political party under Narendra Modi, the 14th prime minister of India. Mohan Bhagwat has served as the Sarsanghchalak of the RSS since March 2009.

Hindutva is a political ideology encompassing the cultural justification of Hindu nationalism and the belief in establishing Hindu hegemony within India. The political ideology was formulated by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in 1922. It is used by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other organisations, collectively called the Sangh Parivar.

The Sangh Parivar refers, as an umbrella term, to the collection of Hindutva organisations spawned by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which remain affiliated to it. These include the political party Bharatiya Janata Party, religious organisation Vishva Hindu Parishad, students union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), religious militant organisation Bajrang Dal that forms the youth wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), and the worker's union Bharatiya Kisan Sangh. It is also often taken to include allied organisations such as the Shiv Sena, which share the ideology of the RSS.

Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, also known by his moniker Doctorji, was an Indian political-social activist, physician and the founder of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Hedgewar founded the RSS in Nagpur in 1925, based on the ideology of Hindutva with the intention of creating a Hindu Rashtra.

The Hindu American Foundation is an American Hindu non-profit advocacy group founded in 2003. The organisation has its roots in the Hindu nationalist organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad America and its student wing Hindu Students Council.

Friends of South Asia (FOSA) is a California, United States based social and political activist organization. Founded jointly in 2001 by Americans of Pakistani and Indian origins, the group describes its mission as "achieve a peaceful, prosperous, and hate-free South Asia...work[ing] through people-to-people contacts, dialog, and other non-violent, non-exclusionary means." FOSA activism has touched upon issues inside South Asia, as well as outside South Asia such as those relating to Israel and United States policy in Cuba and Venezuela among others.

The Coalition Against Genocide is a coalition of about 40 organisations mostly based in the United States and Canada, as well as individuals, who aim to respond to the 2002 Gujarat riots, which they refer to as the "Gujarat genocide", in order to "demand accountability and justice." The coalition of organisations protested against the visit of Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, to the United States in March 2005. Modi was denied a visa and did not visit the U.S. at that time.

Vijay Prashad is an Indian historian, author, journalist, political commentator, and Marxist intellectual. He is the executive-director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Editor of LeftWord Books, Chief Correspondent at Globetrotter, and a senior non-resident fellow at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China. For Tricontinental, he writes a weekly newsletter. Ideologically a Marxist, Prashad is well known for his criticisms of capitalism, neocolonialism, American exceptionalism, and Western imperialism, while expressing support for communism and the global south.

Biju Mathew is a New York-based Marxist activist-intellectual. An immigrant from India, he teaches Information Systems and American studies at Rider University. A veteran labor organizer, he co-founded the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, is a founding secretary of the National Taxi Workers Alliance, and president of the International Alliance of App-Based Transport Workers. As a writer, Mathew has published several academic articles as well as the 2005 book Taxi!: Cabs and Capitalism in New York City.

Hindu terrorism, sometimes called Hindutva terror or, metonymically, saffron terror, refer to terrorist acts carried out on the basis of motivations in broad association with Hindu nationalism or Hindutva.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ekal Vidyalaya</span> One Teacher School Initiative in India

Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation is the principal organisation of the Ekal Abhiyan project, a one teacher school initiative in India. The foundation operates under the umbrella organisation of Ekal Abhiyan Trust and has a number of associated organisations called the Friends of Tribals Society (FTS), Shree Hari Satsang Samiti (SHSS), Arogya Foundation of India (AFI), Grammotham Foundation (GF) and Ekal Sansthan (ES). EVF is actively involved in fund-raising activities in several countries outside India, most notably the United States, and is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The Ekal Vidyalaya schools were assisted by the NDA Government from 1999–2000 onwards.

She co-founded the International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir and was a co-convener from April 2008 to December 2012.

Hindu nationalism has been collectively referred to as the expression of social and political thought, based on the native spiritual and cultural traditions of the Indian subcontinent. "Hindu nationalism" is a simplistic translation of हिन्दू राष्ट्रवाद. It is better described as "Hindu polity".

Sabrang Communications is an organization founded in 1993 that publishes the monthly Communalism Combat magazine and that operates KHOJ, a secular education program, in schools in Mumbai, India. Communalism Combat is edited by Javed Anand and Teesta Setalvad. The Khoj programs try to help children to get past identity labels.

India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF) is a Maryland, US-based 501(c) (3) tax exempt, non-profit organization that supports impoverished people in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. IDRF's programs span all over India from Jammu and Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, and from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, Nepal and more recently Sri Lanka. Since its inception in 1988, IDRF has disbursed $34 million in grants to various developmental programs pertaining to areas like: education, health, women's empowerment, eco-friendly development, good governance, and disaster relief/rehabilitation.

Javed Anand is an Indian journalist and civil rights activist who founded the Mumbai-based Sabrang Communications in 1993. He is married to Teesta Setalvad and they co-edit the monthly Communalism Combat.

Narayanan Menon Komerath is an Indian-born professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. He has written numerous articles and books. He is known for his views on ways to build structures in space from asteroid debris, which could be used for a space-based economy, and for his research into microwave power transmission in space.

Yellapragada Sudershan Rao is an Indian historian, who was appointed as the chairperson of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) by the Government of India, serving from July 2014 to July 2017. He was formerly a professor of history at Kakatiya University in Telangana, and had previously served as a member of the ICHR. He was a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Yojana, an affiliate of the Hindu-nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and the head of its Andhra Pradesh branch.

LeftWord Books is a New Delhi–based publisher that seeks to reflect the views of the Left in India and South Asia. Its Managing Director is Prakash Karat, the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M). The Chief Editor is Vijay Prashad and the Managing Editor is the actor-publisher Sudhanva Deshpande.
