FOB Wishtan is an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Forward Operating Base (FOB) operated by the British Army and located in Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

International Security Assistance Force NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan, 2001–14

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan, established by the United Nations Security Council in December 2001 by Resolution 1386, as envisaged by the Bonn Agreement. Its main purpose was to train the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and assist Afghanistan in rebuilding key government institutions, but was also engaged in the 2001–present war with the Taliban insurgency.

History

FOB Wishtan was built by Echo Company, 2nd Battalion 7th Marines, United States Marine Corps (USMC) during 2008 and was handed to the British Army during October 2008 with the first unit being Whiskey Company, 45 Commando, Royal Marines.

Operation Herrick British military operation in Afghanistan

Operation Herrick is the codename under which all British operations in the War in Afghanistan were conducted from 2002 to the end of combat operations in 2014. It consisted of the British contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), and support to the American-led Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Since 2003, Operation Herrick has increased in size and breadth to match ISAF's growing geographical intervention in Afghanistan.

Operation Red Dagger

Operation Sond Chara was an 18-day-long campaign with its aims and objectives centred on four Taliban strongholds near the town of Nad-e-Ali in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The operation was named after the commando patch worn by members of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines. 1,500 British troops were involved, supported by Danish, Estonian and Afghan forces in the pre-Christmas offensive, commencing on 7 December 2008 with a night attack on Taliban defences in a village south of the operational area.
