Ski mountaineering is a skiing discipline that involves climbing mountains either on skis or carrying them, depending on the steepness of the ascent, and then descending on skis. There are two major categories of equipment used: free-heel Telemark skis and skis based on Alpine skis, where the heel is free for ascents, but is fixed during descent. The discipline may be practiced recreationally or as a competitive sport.
The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
The International University Sports Federation is responsible for the organization and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 25. It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organizations and currently has 165 member associations from five continents. Between 1949 and 2011, it was based in Brussels (Belgium); it was relocated to Lausanne (Switzerland) since 2011.

HEI Lille or École des Hautes Études d’Ingénieur is a private school of engineering located in Lille, France, member of Lille Catholic University and a French Grande École. The school trains students during five years and delivers the diploma of Ingénieur. The diploma is approved both by the State and the CTI. HEI is a member of the Conference des Grandes Ecoles (CGE) guaranteeing the teaching and selectivity in admissions. In 2019, the school is ranked n°3 by Eduniversal among post baccalaureate training programs of general engineering in France.

The first appearance of freestyle skiing at the Winter Universiade was as an optional sport in the 2005 edition which was held in Innsbruck, Austria. Due to the growing demand, the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire decided to making it a mandatory sporting starting in 2021.
The Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games, commonly known as Lake Placid 2023, was a collegiate multi-sport winter sports held between January 12 to January 22, 2023 and had Lake Placid, New York, United States, as main host city. Alongside Lake Placid, events were also hosted by neighbouring cities of Wilmington, Saranac Lake, Potsdam and North Creek also located at the New York state. The event is also known as the 31st Winter Universiade as administered by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

The 2025 FISU Winter World University Games, also known as the XXXII Winter World University Games, or the 32nd Winter Universiade, and commonly known as Turin 2025 or Torino 2025, was a multi-sport event for student and youth athletes, held between 13–23 January 2025, in Turin, Italy. The Piedmontese capital was confirmed as the host city for the games on 15 May 2021. This was the 12th time that the World University Games had been held in Italy, the 7th time that the Winter Games were held in Italy, and the 2nd time in the city, as the city previously hosted the 2007 Games. The city is considered the birthplace of the event, as it hosted the first summer Games in 1959 and again in 1970, becoming the first city to host summer and winter editions of the World University Games. If the summer editions are counted, this was the 12th time that the World University Games have been held on Italian soil, as the most recent were the 2019 Games held in Naples.

Éric Monnin is a French sports historian and sociologist, specializing in the International Olympic Movement. He holds a senior secondary school teaching degree in Physical Education and Sports. He graduated with a PhD in sociology and is a lecturer accredited to conduct research at the University of Franche-Comté. He is a member of the Culture, Sport, Health, Society (C3S) laboratory at the University of Franche-Comté.
Ukraine competed at the 2025 Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy, from 13 to 23 January 2025. The team won 12 medals and finished 10th. This marked the best result since the 2011 Winter Universiade, when Ukraine won 15 medals including 6 golds and finished 3rd. Ukraine debuted in curling and won its first Universiade medals in freestyle skiing.
