Frances Stark (born 1967) is an interdisciplinary artist and writer, whose work centers on the use and meaning of language, and the translation of this process into the creative act. [1] She often works with carbon paper to hand-trace letters, words, and sentences from classic works by Emily Dickinson, Goethe, Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, and others to explore the voices and interior states of writers. [2] [3] She uses these hand-traced words, often in repetition, as visual motifs in drawings and mixed media works that reference a subject, mood, or another discipline such as music, architecture, or philosophy. Early life and education

Born in 1967 in Newport Beach, California, Frances Stark is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. [5] She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1991 with a BA in Humanities, and from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1993 with an MFA. [6]

Work

Stark is a key figure in the Los Angeles art community. [7] She was formerly an Assistant Professor at University of Southern California Roski School of Fine Arts. [8]

For more than two decades she has been making poetic works that explore a wide variety of subjects experienced by artists and non-artists alike, including writing, procrastination, the banality of life, failure, success, pride, self-doubt, motherhood, pedagogy, institutional critique, class, music, literature, poetry, philosophy, art, sadness, and relationships. Words and images are at the heart of her practice, and Stark often takes a personal, auto-biographical approach to shared, universal experiences.[ citation needed ]

My Best Thing (2011)

The feature-length video work My Best Thing, first presented at the 54th Venice Biennale, stems from an anonymous chat site Stark encountered online. The dialogues between Stark and her chat partners are represented by generalized, cartoon avatars that speak the chat transcripts. [9] The subject matter of these chats range from art and the creative process, to sex and anonymity. [10] The video's form and content show how the new modes of online communication allow for both greater intimacy and anonymity, giving rise to new kinds of behaviors and relationships. [11]

Exhibitions

Stark's work had been exhibited internationally, including the 2017 and 2008 Whitney Biennial, [14] [15] the Performa 11 biennial, [16] and the 54th Venice Biennale. [17] Solo exhibitions of Stark's work include 'US Greatest Hits Mixtape: Volume 2' at greengrassi, London (2020), [18] Teen O.P.E.R.A. at Gavin Brown's Enterprise, New York (2018), Uh-Oh: Frances Stark 1991-2015 at The Hammer Museum (2015–16), [19] "Intimism," at the Art Institute of Chicago (2015), [20] "Francis Stark: This could become a gimick [sic] or an honest articulation of the workings of the mind" at the List Visual Arts Center (2010-11), [21] and The Fall of Frances Stark, Van Abbemuseum, Eindoven, (2007). Shana Lutker is an artist currently working and living in Los Angeles, CA. Lutker works in sculpture, installation, performance, and text. Her concepts are often synthesized from historical and theoretical research. Lutker is represented in Los Angeles by Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. In addition to solo exhibitions at Vielmetter, LAXART, and Barbara Seiler Galerie, she was included in Performa 13 and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Lutker has also exhibited at the Perez Art Museum Miami.

Performa is a non-profit arts organization well-known for the Performa Biennial, a festival of performance art that happens every two year in various venues and institutions in New York City. Performa was founded in 2004 by art historian and curator RoseLee Goldberg. Since 2005, Performa curators have included Charles Aubin, Defne Ayas, Tairone Bastien, Mark Beasley, Adrienne Edwards, Laura McLean-Ferris, Kathy Noble, Job Piston, and Lana Wilson. The organization commissions new works and tours performances premiered at the biennial. It also manages the work of choreographer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer.

Hannah Greely is an American mixed media artist. She mainly creates site-specific sculptural works that seek to redefine the boundary between art and life. Her sculptures are colorful and often replicate ordinary objects or subjects, with subtle incongruencies in material or form. Her material experimentations lend the work an uncanny quality, as recognizable objects fade from real to fictional. Greely’s work explores open dialogue between object and environment, as well as the theatrical otherness of sculpture.

Danielle Dean is a British-American visual artist. She works in drawing, installation, performance and video. She has exhibited in London and in the United States; her work was included in an exhibition at the Hammer Museum focusing on new or under-recognized artists working in Los Angeles.

Jill Mulleady is an artist. She was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She moved to London to study at Chelsea School of Art, in 2007–09, where she received a Master of Fine Arts. She lives and work in Los Angeles, California.

Sue Williams is an American artist born in 1954. She came to prominence in the early 1980s, with works that echoed and argued with the dominant postmodern feminist aesthetic of the time. In the years since, her focus has never waned yet her aesthetic interests have moved toward abstraction along with her subject matter and memories. She lives and works in New York.

Carolina Caycedo is a multimedia artist based in Los Angeles.
