Francesca Harper (born 1969) is an American dancer and choreographer.

Early life, family and education

Harper is the daughter of dancer and educator Denise Jefferson [1] who directed The Ailey School and her former husband, attorney and activist John Roy Harper II. She is the niece of Pulitzer Prize winning writer Margo Jefferson. [2]

Harper was named a scholar of the arts in the Presidential Scholars Program in 1987. [3] She studied at the School of American Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet School.

Career

Dance career

Early in Harper's career she was a soloist with Dance Theater of Harlem. [4] She was a principal dancer in William Forsythe's Ballet Frankfurt from 1994 to 1999. [5] In 2005, she founded the non-profit dance company The Francesca Harper Project. [6]

After deliberation by Robert Battle, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Bennett Rink, Director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Harper was named artistic director of The Alvin Ailey II Company in 2021. [7]

Film work

Harper was a ballet consultant for the film Black Swan, [8] and has appeared as a dancer in the television series Boardwalk Empire. [9] She is currently engaged as an Executive Producer with Sony Pictures to develop a new project. [10]

Awards

Long Island University honored Harper with a Living History award during Black History Month in 2013. [11]

From 1992 to 2007 the Artistic Executive Director of the Minnesota Ballet was Allen Fields, who retired to become Artistic Director Emirtus. Fields acquired rights to works by choreographers including Agnes de Mille, Antony Tudor, and George Balanchine. He was succeeded by Robert Gardner. In 2019 Karl von Rabenau was appointed Artistic Director. The Minnesota Ballet entered its 54th season in 2019/20.

Her most recent season with The Kathryn Posin Dance Company commissioned by 92nd Street Y in February 2016 received an award from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and an Arts Works Grant from the NEA in 2017.

Melanie Person is an American dancer, choreographer, and educator who began her career at 14 as a "baby ballerina" with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She is currently the co-director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's Ailey School, with Tracy Inman.

Troy Powell also known as Troy O'Neil Powell is an American dancer, choreographer, educator, and director. He is a former principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and former artistic director of AAADT's second company, Ailey 2. Powell was fired in July 2020 after an independent investigation into allegations of sexual abuse at the Ailey School concluded that he had engaged in "inappropriate communications" with students who were interested in joining the Ailey 2.

She continues to exhibit that her voice is indeed relevant and continues to remain significant within the dance community and world today.

Alicia Graf Mack is an American dancer and teacher. She danced with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and taught at Washington University in St. Louis, Webster University, and University of Houston. As the youngest and first Black Dean and Director of the Dance Division at Juilliard School, a position she attained in 2018, she has been credited with "remaking Juilliard Dance."
