Stony Brook is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the North Shore of Long Island. Begun in the colonial era as an agricultural enclave, the hamlet experienced growth first as a resort town and then to its current state as one of Long Island's major tourist towns and centers of education. Despite being referred to as a village by residents and tourists alike, Stony Brook has never been legally incorporated by the state. The population was 13,740 at the 2010 census.

The Strand Bookstore is an independent bookstore located at 828 Broadway, at the corner of East 12th Street in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, two blocks south of Union Square. The Charles B. Wang Center, located at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, is a building dedicated to understanding Asian and American cultures, and the interactions of these cultures with other world cultures. The center was completed in 2002, and was designed by P.H. Tuan. Building of the center was intended to be funded by Charles B. Wang through a $52 million donation to Stony Brook University, which was then the largest ever private donation to a school in the State University of New York system. Actual construction costs far exceeded the original donation, becoming a source of controversy among students and faculty at the time.
Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH), previously known as Stony Brook University Medical Center, is a nationally ranked, 695-bed non-profit, research, and academic medical center located in Stony Brook, New York, providing tertiary care for the entire Long Island region. The medical center is a part of the Stony Brook Medicine Health System and is made up of four hospitals that include the Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children's Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. SBUH is affiliated with the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Long Island's only tertiary care and a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, the hospital is ranked as the 12th best in New York and 10th in the New York metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital campus also includes a rooftop helipad to better serve critical cases.
The Stony Brook Indoor Sports Complex is a multi-purpose complex located in Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY. The Complex houses the Island Federal Arena on the west end, the Pritchard Gymnasium on the east end, the Dubin Family Athletic Performance Center on the north side, the Goldstein Family Student–Athlete Development Center, a 25-yard long swimming pool, and many other athletic facilities within. Currently, the Stony Brook Seawolves men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs’ home games are played in the Complex, with men’s and women’s basketball playing in the Island Federal Arena and volleyball playing in the Pritchard Gymnasium.

The school competes at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and joined the all-sports Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) on July 1, 2022 after having been a member of the CAA's technically separate football arm of CAA Football since 2013. James D. Fiore Jr. is an American sports administrator and former college football player who served as the Director of Athletics at Stony Brook University from 2003 to 2013. He played college football at Hofstra from 1988 to 1990. Fiore was named Stony Brook's athletic director in 2003 and was fired in 2013 after numerous accusations of sexual harassment, misappropriation of university resources and employment discrimination.

Immediately across from the center is Avalon Park and Preserve, a 140-acre park with multiple trails for the public year-round. Other environs of Stony Brook Village Center include the Three Village Inn, the Jazz Loft and the Long Island Museum. The Three Village Inn is a historic establishment that offers lodging both at the main house and in cottages, as well as 250 seat restaurant. The Mirabelle Restaurant and Tavern is located inside the inn, with Executive Chef Guy Reuge providing “fresh-meets-French cuisine”. The Jazz Loft is a museum and music venue that resides directly across from the Three Village Inn on one side, and Stony Brook Village Center on the other. The Long Island Museum, which holds exhibits of American art, history and carriages and the historic Country House Restaurant are moments away at the entrance to the village.

David Olmstead Conover is an American marine biologist and professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. He was the Vice President for Research at Stony Brook University and operations manager for the SUNY Research Foundation, and until his retirement in 2020 he was Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of Oregon. He is known for his research on the ecology of marine fishes and fisheries. His son is Adam Conover, host of Adam Ruins Everything, and his daughter is Emily Conover, scientific journalist at Science News.
