Frank Pietronigro is an American interdisciplinary artist, educator and author. He was the first artist to create "drift paintings", where his body floated within a three-dimensional painting that he created in zero gravity aboard NASA's KC135 aircraft. [1] He is a former Associate Fellow at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at the Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts. [2] [3]
Pietronigro studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the Multimedia Studies Program, San Francisco State University, and he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts, from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996.
On April 4, 1998, Pietronigro flew from NASA's Johnson Space Center, aboard a KC135 turbojet, to create ‘drift paintings’ as the artist's body floated within the 3-D kinetic painting space facilitated by parabolic flight and microgravity. [1] [4] [5] He appropriated modernist painting conventions using similar techniques employed in abstract expressionism but with the intention of having different outcomes within a postmodern situation. Pietronigro painted by squeezing rainbow colored acrylic paints from pastry bags into the space surrounding his body. A 75-inch-high (1,900 mm) by 48-inch-wide (1,200 mm) by 52-inch-deep (1,300 mm) plastic bag was tethered to the interior of the jet using bungee cords and Velcro. This "creativity chamber", as he called it, was to contain the floating paint while allowing for free-float body movement within the space. Before flight Pietronigro filled 10", 14" and 18" pastry bags with acrylic gel medium, at the viscosity of toothpaste, and then he used these tools to project the paint into the space surrounding his body.
Pietronigro is co-founder and project director of the Zero Gravity Arts Consortium (ZGAC) in the United States. [5] [6] He co-founded the organization in 1999 with Laura Knott and Lorelei Lisowsky. [3] The group is an international space arts organization that aims to fostering greater access for artists to space flight technology and zero gravity space through the creation of international partnerships with space agencies, space industry entrepreneurs, arts and science organizations and leading universities. It is the first organization of its kind, facilitating parabolic flight projects that the group hopes will help teams of artists to have permanent access to space transportation systems including the International Space Station.
Pietronigro is one of the coordinators for "Yuri’s Night" Bay Area 2007/08 held at NASA Ames Research Center. [7] "Yuri's Night" is a series of parties in various countries that celebrate the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in 1961. Pietronigro leads a Yuri's Night Bay Area event at NASA Ames Research Center on the tarmac and surrounding aircraft hangars.
In 2006, he was co-chair of the Space Art Track of the 25th International Space Development Conference, co-sponsored by the National Space Society and the Planetary Society. [8]

Pietronigro has been awarded multiple San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Commission Grants; a National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program Award; a Sobel Memorial Scholarship from the San Francisco Art Institute; a Creativity Certificate of Distinction from Art Direction Magazine; and a Merit Award from the Society of Communicating Arts, during their 32nd Annual Exhibit of Advertising and Design.

Space Adventures, Inc. is an American space tourism company founded in 1998 by Eric C. Anderson. Its offerings include zero-gravity atmospheric flights, orbital spaceflights, and other spaceflight-related experiences including cosmonaut training, spacewalk training, and launch tours. Plans announced thus far include sub-orbital and lunar spaceflights, though these are not being actively pursued at present. Nine of its clients have participated in the orbital spaceflight program with Space Adventures, including one who took two separate trips to space.

Yuri's Night is an international celebration held every April 12 to commemorate milestones in space exploration. It is named for the first human to launch into space, Yuri Gagarin, who flew the Vostok 1 spaceship on April 12, 1961. In 2011, Yuri's Night was celebrated at over 567 events in 75 countries on seven continents. Yuri's Night is often called the "World Space Party". The launch of STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission, is also honored, as it was launched 20 years to the day after Vostok 1, on April 12, 1981.
Zero Gravity Corporation is an American company based in Exploration Park, Florida, formerly of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which operates weightless flights from United States airports. Zero-G is governed under Part 121 of FAA regulations enabling the company to cater to both tourists and researchers alike. Zero-G is operated by Everts Air Cargo who holds the 121 certificate.
A space toilet or zero-gravity toilet is a toilet that can be used in a weightless environment. In the absence of weight, the collection and retention of liquid and solid waste is directed by use of airflow. Since the air used to direct the waste is returned to the cabin, it is filtered beforehand to control odor and cleanse bacteria. In older systems, wastewater is vented into space, and any solids are compressed and stored for removal upon landing. More modern systems expose solid waste to vacuum pressures to kill bacteria, which prevents odor problems and kills pathogens.
Space art or astronomical art is a genre of art that focuses on the universe as a frame of reference. Like other genres, space art has many facets and encompasses realism, impressionism, sculpture, abstract imagery, and zoological art. Though artists have long produced art with astronomical elements, the genre of space art itself began only when technological advancement allowed for more detailed observation of the night sky. Space art also attempts to communicate ideas related to space, often including an artistic interpretation of cosmological phenomena and scientific discoveries. In some cases, artists who consider themselves space artists use more than illustration and painting to communicate astronomy or works depicting space, with some working directly with spaceflight technology and scientists in attempts to expand the arts, humanities, and cultural expression relative to space exploration.

He still serves as a member of the Virgin Galactic Advisory Board. Vladimir Pletser is Director of Space Training Operations at Blue Abyss since 2018, where he is in charge of developing astronaut training programs. From 2016 to early 2018, he was a Visiting Professor and Scientific Adviser at the Technology and Engineering Centre for Space Utilization (CSU) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China. He supported the preparation of scientific experiments in microgravity for the Chinese Tiangong space station and for aircraft parabolic flights. The Uranus Experiment is a 1999 three-part pornographic science fiction video produced by the Swedish production and distribution company Private Media Group that is notable for being partially shot in microgravity. In a scene from the second part, the performers Sylvia Saint and Nick Lang have sex in zero gravity for about 20 seconds. The scene was shot during a parabolic flight.
Shana Mabari is an American contemporary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Central to her artistic practice is a focus on the intersection of art, science, and technology as articulated in her sculptures, installations, and immersive environments. Working in industrially fabricated acrylic, steel, and reflective materials, Mabari engages with color, light, reflection, geometric form, and scale in a manner that connects to the Light and Space art movement that originated in Southern California in the 1960s. Artist residencies with NASA in 2018 and the international nonprofit organization Sea Shepherd Global in 2020 further expanded Mabari’s practice.
