Frankie Wainman Junior (born 6 October 1971) is a BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars racing driver, who races using the number 515. Wainman is a three-time BriSCA F1 World Champion, fourteen-time National Points Champion and nine-time British Champion along with many other titles.

Early life

Wainman was brought up in the small town of Silsden, West Yorkshire. He is the son of former racer Frankie Wainman (racing number 212). [2]

Racing career

Wainman began racing at ten years old in Ministox and won a number of championships including the British Points Championship.

At sixteen he made the switch to BriSCA F1 using a car he had built himself. [3] After three weeks he won his first final, in November 1987. He has won three World Championships [4] and fourteen National Points Championships, [5] as well as many other championships. Wainman also builds stock cars for other drivers. In the Netherlands, Wainman has won the Long Track World Championship at Baarlo and World Cup at Venray.

In the UK 'off season' between January and March, Wainman travels to New Zealand to take part in their equivalent formula, Superstocks. [6] In 1998 he won the World 240 Championship, and won two more in later years. [7] As of 2013 he is the only driver to have won this title three times. [8] He has built and raced his own car which he kept over in New Zealand but this was sold in 2014.

In 2007 Frankie had an almost career ending accident at Hednesford Hills Raceway. [9]

Wainman and rival driver Andy Smith were the subject of a BBC documentary Gears and Tears which aired in 2010, being the stock car version of War of the Roses with Wainman from Silsden and Smith being from Rochdale. During the 1980s both of their fathers (Frankie Wainman and Stuart Smith) were in close battles week in and week out, the same as Frankie Junior and Andy were in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

In 2012 Frankie amassed 250 final wins, becoming only the second driver ever to accomplish this feat, [10] Stuart Smith being the other with 500 final wins.

Personal life

Wainman has two children, Phoebe and Frankie, both of whom have taken up racing in BriSCA F1, while in V8 Hotstox Phoebe became the first female stock car driver to win a major championship.

BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars is a class of single-seater stock-car-racing in the UK with custom-built cars, with races conducted on walled oval tracks of either shale or tarmac of approximately a quarter-mile in length. The cars are of an open wheel design. The cars may be of any horsepower and drivers can use any engine they choose, with Chevrolet based small or big block V8 engines being the most popular. The season runs from March through to November, with occasional meetings during Christmas time.

The World Championship is an annual competition started in 1955 for BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars. It is the premier championship of the formula and the winner is granted the honour of racing with a gold roof and wing until the next World Final, and if desired they can race under number 1.

The National Points Championship is a season-long competition for BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars. The winner is granted the honour of racing with a silver roof for the following season.

BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars is a class of single seater auto racing in the UK. Cars are custom-built and race on oval tracks of either shale or tarmac of up to a quarter-mile in length. The tracks they race on are surrounded by either steel plate or post and wire fences to keep the cars on the track. Racing involves contact, drivers are allowed to push, punt or spin fellow competitors out of the way. The cars are very strong and are of an open wheel design, but are designed with the contact element in mind, with front and rear bumpers and a sturdy chassis and roll cage.

Barry Goldin is a BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars racing driver from Bolton, Greater Manchester who races under number 401. Goldin is one of a select group of drivers who has won the National Points Championship on three occasions. In 2012, Barry married fellow racer and BTCC Grid Girl Jo Polley, although the pair announced their separation in September 2014.

Northampton Shaleway also known as Brafield, is used for BriSCA F1 Stock Cars, BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars, V8 Hotstox, and various other forms of oval motor sport including National Hot Rods, Banger racing, Saloon Stock Cars, Ministox and Rebels. It also briefly hosted speedway and greyhound racing.

Raceway Venray, formerly known as Circuit de Peel, is a motorsport racing circuit in Venray, Netherlands. The track consists of a banked half mile oval with a flat quarter mile oval inside and features a karting track using portions of both along with dedicated sections. The track host its own local championships, national championships in cooperation with the Midland Circuit in Lelystad and Circuit de Polderputten in Ter Apel.
