Fred C. Whiting (born December 14,1938) is an American former politician. He served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 1993 to 1994 and in the Senate from 1995 to 2002. [1] [2]
South Dakota is a U.S. state in the North Central region of the United States. It is also part of the Great Plains. South Dakota is named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux Native American tribes,who comprise a large portion of the population with nine reservations currently in the state and have historically dominated the territory. South Dakota is the seventeenth largest by area,but the 5th least populous,and the 5th least densely populated of the 50 United States. As the southern part of the former Dakota Territory,South Dakota became a state on November 2,1889,simultaneously with North Dakota. They are the 39th and 40th states admitted to the union;President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the statehood papers before signing them so that no one could tell which became a state first. Pierre is the state capital,and Sioux Falls,with a population of about 192,200,is South Dakota's largest city.
Adams County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census,the population was 2,200. The county seat is Hettinger. The county was created on April 17,1907,and organized one week later. It was named for John Quincy Adams (1848–1919),a railroad official for the Milwaukee Road Railroad and distant relative of sixth U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767–1848).
South Dakota State University is a public land-grant research university in Brookings,South Dakota. Founded in 1881,it is the state's largest and most comprehensive university and the oldest continually-operating university in South Dakota. The university is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents,which governs the state's six public universities and two special schools.

Sioux City is a city in Woodbury and Plymouth counties in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 85,797 in the 2020 census,making it the fourth-largest city in Iowa. The bulk of the city is in Woodbury County,of which it is the county seat,though a small portion is in Plymouth County. Sioux City is located at the navigational head of the Missouri River. The city is home to several cultural points of interest including the Sioux City Public Museum,Sioux City Art Center and Sergeant Floyd Monument,which is a National Historic Landmark. Sioux City is the primary city of the five-county Sioux City,IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA),with a population of 149,940 in the 2020 census. The Sioux City–Vermillion,IA–NE–SD Combined Statistical Area had a population of 175,638 as of 2020.
The Big Sioux River is a tributary of the Missouri River in eastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa in the United States. It flows generally southwardly for 419 mi (674 km),and its watershed is 9,006 sq mi (23,330 km2). The United States Board on Geographic Names settled on "Big Sioux River" as the stream's name in 1931. The river was named after the Lakota people which was known by them as Tehankasandata,or Thick Wooded River.
The Summit League,or The Summit,is an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference with its membership mostly located in the Midwestern United States from Illinois on the East of the Mississippi River to the Dakotas and Nebraska on the West,with additional members in the Western state of Colorado and the Southern state of Oklahoma. Founded as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities in 1982,it rebranded as the Mid-Continent Conference in 1989,then again as the Summit League on June 1,2007. The Moorish Revival building is decorated with crop art;the murals and designs covering the building are made from corn and other grains,and a new design is constructed each year. The Corn Palace is a popular tourist destination,visited by up to 500,000 people each year.

The Mammoth Site is a museum and paleontological site near Hot Springs,South Dakota,in the Black Hills. It is an active paleontological excavation site at which research and excavations are continuing. The facility encloses a prehistoric sinkhole that formed and was slowly filled with sediments during the Pleistocene era. The sedimentary fill of the sinkhole contains the remains of Pleistocene fauna and flora preserved by entrapment and burial within a sinkhole. As of 2016,the remains of 61 mammoths,including 58 North American Columbian and 3 woolly mammoths had been recovered. Mammoth bones were found at the site in 1974,and a museum and building enclosing the site were established. The museum now contains an extensive collection of mammoth remains.

On June 15,2021,South Dakota public health authorities reported 25 new cases of COVID-19,bringing the state's cumulative total to 124,377 cases.
