The chief justice of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the head of the judiciary of Sri Lanka and the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Established in 1801,the chief justice is one of ten Supreme Court justices;the other nine are the puisne justices of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The post was created in 1801. Lovell Burchett Clarence was a barrister and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon from 1876 to 1888. Clarence went to the University of Cambridge and was called to the bar on 17 November 1864. Prior to serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court Clarence served as Deputy Queen's Advocate of Ceylon from 1873 to 1874 and Acting Queen's Advocate of Ceylon from 1874 to 1875 before being elevated to Second Puisne Justice on 1 February 1876 and finally Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon on 4 April 1876. Clarence was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Edward Shepherd Creasy. He was the 27th Supreme Court Justice.

John Godfind Hillebrand was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. Christopher Temple was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon from 1854 to 1873. Temple had served as Deputy Queen's Advocate of Ceylon and Judge of the District Court of Colombo prior to being elevated as a Puisne Justice. He was appointed Senior Puisne Justice on 1 January 1863 and acted as Chief Justice when Chief Justice Edward Shepherd Creasy went on leave on 7 September 1869.
George Lawson was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. Lawson was a co-founder of the Law Library of Colombo and it is believed he was of Jewish origin.

He is the great great uncle of Nalin Thomas Jay,who is also a member of Lincoln's Inn and currently CEO of Carnegie Stewart in Hong Kong.
George Henry Withers was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon who served from 1 January 1893 to 1900. Withers had acted as Puisne Justice From 6 July 1892 to 1 January 1893.
Hethumuni Ananda Gunasena de Silva was a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. He was the son of Puisne Justice Hethumuni Ayadoris de Silva,CMG.
