Frederick T. "'Rick" Gray Jr. (born March 22,1951) is an American politician,writer,actor,and former attorney and educator. Appointed by Governor John N. Dalton as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1978,Gray later resigned in 1981 in solidarity with jailed striking air traffic controllers. Gray spent several decades in Virginia teaching,writing,and acting before moving to Cannon Beach,Oregon in 2018. He is currently running for the Oregon House of Representatives in the 32nd district. Rick Gray was born in Hopewell,Virginia to Frederick T. Gray and Evelyn Helms Johnson Gray and grew up in the historic Bermuda Hundred community in Chesterfield County,Virginia. After graduating from the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia Law School,he practiced law at Williams,Mullen &Christian in Richmond,Virginia until his appointment as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Gray reformed Virginia's lobbyist disclosure rules by requiring disclosure of any entertainment costing more than $100,or any gifts which cost more than $5,despite pressure from lobbyists who had donated to Dalton's campaign for governor. [4] Once considered a rising star in the Virginia Republican Party,Gray opposed the nomination of Ronald Reagan as the GOP candidate for president in 1980 and left the Republican Party rather than support Reagan. [5] During the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization strike in 1981,Gray declined to fly in solidarity with jailed air traffic controllers,and subsequently resigned as Secretary of the Commonwealth as a result of the backlash from Virginia Republicans. Between 1982 and 2004 Gray taught history at Midlothian High School in Chesterfield County,William Monroe High School in Greene County,Virginia,and the Appomattox Regional Governor's School in Petersburg,Virginia. He also began dramatic acting,including a UVA Drama production of Much Ado About Nothing with then-students Tina Fey and Sean Patrick Thomas. [7] Gray later performed with the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival,the Virginia Shakespeare Festival,and Richmond Shakespeare.
Gray also wrote columns for the Chester,Virginia Village News and the Style Weekly in Richmond. [8] He continued to act and write after moving to Staunton,Virginia in 2012 and finally to Cannon Beach in 2018.
Gray is running as an independent in Oregon's 32nd House district in the November 2022 general election. [1] [2]

In the general election,Herring defeated Adams to win a second term as Attorney General of Virginia.
Frederick Thomas Gray was a Virginia attorney and Democratic Party politician. Governor J. Lindsay Almond appointed Gray to serve as Attorney General of Virginia after the resignation of Attorney General Albertis Harrison to run for Governor of Virginia during the Massive Resistance crisis in Virginia. Gray returned to private practice at Williams Mullen after Robert Young Button took office. Gray later served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate as he continued his law practice.
The 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election was concurrent with other elections for Virginia state offices. Incumbent Democratic Governor Ralph Northam was ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits governors from serving consecutive terms. Businessman Glenn Youngkin won the Republican nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former Governor Terry McAuliffe easily won.
Jean Louise Harris was an American physician and politician. The first black woman to graduate from the Medical College of Virginia,she went on to serve on the faculty there before being appointed Virginia Secretary of Human Resources by Governor John N. Dalton. Harris moved to Minnesota,where she ran in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor in 1990 and eventually for mayor of Eden Prairie. She was mayor until her death from lung cancer in 2001.
