A friction motor is a simple mechanism to propel toy cars, trucks, trains, action figures and similar toys. The motor consists of a large flywheel which is connected to the drive wheels of the toy via a gear train with very low gear ratio, so that the flywheel revolves much faster than the wheels. The flywheel's axis is perpendicular to the direction in which the toy faces and in which it moves. When the toy is pushed forward, the drive wheels engage the flywheel. If higher energies are desired, pushing the vehicle forward repeatedly spins this flywheel up to greater speed. When let go, the flywheel drives the vehicle forward. Energy which is input by pushing the car is stored by the flywheel as rotational kinetic energy and can propel the toy after it is released. [1] It is friction between the tyres and the surface on which the vehicle is operating which enables the energy input process, thus giving the name 'friction motor' to the device.
As the flywheel, unlike the spring of a pullback motor, is continuously rotating, the motor may be "pumped up" by pushing the car repeatedly forward. In some cases, the cars work both in forward and reverse; in other cases, a one-way clutch can disengage a component in the gear assembly to prevent input of rotational effort in the reverse sense.[ citation needed ] Some used a zip cord pulled from the vehicle body to accelerate the flywheel directly.[ citation needed ] Another system was the Turbo Tower of Power (TTP) in which air expelled from a hand-operated pump pushed turbine blades on the flywheel's rim. These toys were especially popular in the 1960s to 1980s though they continue to be available today.[ citation needed ]

A limited-slip differential (LSD) is a type of differential gear train that allows its two output shafts to rotate at different speeds but limits the maximum difference between the two shafts. Hydramatic is an automatic transmission developed by both General Motors' Cadillac and Oldsmobile divisions. Introduced in 1939 for the 1940 model year vehicles, the Hydramatic was the first mass-produced fully-automatic transmission developed for passenger automobile use.

Clutch control refers to the act of controlling the speed of a vehicle with a manual transmission by partially engaging the clutch plate, using the clutch pedal instead of the accelerator pedal. The purpose of a clutch is in part to allow such control; in particular, a clutch provides transfer of torque between shafts spinning at different speeds. In the extreme, clutch control is used in performance driving, such as starting from a dead stop with the engine producing maximum torque at high RPM.
The Turboglide is a Chevrolet constant torque, continuously variable automatic transmission first offered as an option on Chevrolet V8 passenger cars for 1957. It consisted of a turbine-driven planetary gearbox with a 'switch pitch' dual-pitch torque converter stator. It had a die-cast aluminum transmission case, like Packard's Ultramatic of 1956. Turboglide cost about $50 more than the Powerglide 2-speed automatic. It was available in all V8-powered 1957-1961 Chevrolet models except the Corvette. General Motors produced 646,000 of these transmissions during its production.
A drivetrain or transmission system, is the group of components that deliver mechanical power from the prime mover to the driven components. In automotive engineering, the drivetrain is the components of a motor vehicle that deliver power to the drive wheels. This excludes the engine or motor that generates the power. In marine applications, the drive shaft will drive a propeller, thruster, or waterjet rather than a drive axle, while the actual engine might be similar to an automotive engine. Other machinery, equipment and vehicles may also use a drivetrain to deliver power from the engine(s) to the driven components.
