Futsal has been played in Italy on an organised basis since 1987.
The Associazione Italiana Football Sala (Italian Futsal Association / AIFS) was founded in 1987, and renamed the Federazione Italiana Football Sala (Italian Futsal Federation / FIFS) in 1988. . It was immediately recognized by FIFUSA (the international governing body of futsal, known by the Portuguese acronym Federação Internacional de Futebol de Salão). In 1988 it was among the founders of the European Union of Futsal (UEFS), the governing body in Europe. In 1991 it organized the World Championships in Milan. In the five years From 1992 to 1996, it organized the Mickey Mouse Trophy, sponsored by the Walt Disney. In 1992 it took part in the European Championship held in Porto (Portugal) by the Spanish UEFS. In 1994 he took part for the last time in World Cup organized by the FIFUSA. The Italy national team finished in last place. FIFS sent the teams who won national championships to participate in the Champions League Cup. In 1991 AS Milan finished seventh, as did GS Danypel Milan in 1992 and 1993. In 1995 the Sporting Turro was placed eight. Giovanni Caminiti, the President of the FIFS ceased its work at the end of the 1990s due to ill health, and the organisation was dormant until the summer of 2009 when Axel Paderni revived its activities.
In 2009 it joined the International Futsal World League Association, founded in Switzerland to preserve and promote Futsal globally. Now 15 national futsal organisations are member of the association: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Monaco, Seborga, Switzerland, Tunisia. The association organizes international friendly matches for national teams and clubs, the Mediterranean Cup (for men and for disabled athletes) and Mundialito Cup.

The European Futsal Association or European Union of Futsal (UEFS) was the international sporting association for futsal in Europe. Its name has been directly translated into many languages, and in English has been known as both the European Futsal Association and the European Union of Futsal. It was founded in 1985 in Madrid, then transferred to Moscow. UEFS was affiliated to the Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF) until 2017. However, UEFS was disaffiliated and Futsal European Federation was established to replace it.
The Italy men's national pitch and putt team represents Italy in the pitch and putt international competitions. It is managed by the Federazione Italiana de Pitch and Putt (FIPP).
The AMF Futsal World Championships is the international championships for futsal, the indoor version of football organized by FIFUSA (1971–2002) and AMF (2003–present).
The Lega Pallavolo Serie A is structured in several levels of importance; the highest of them is SuperLega. Since the early 1980s, many among the best volleyball players in the world play in Superlega and the overall level of competition is considerably high. Nowadays, the SuperLega is widely considered the best league in the world.
The Catalonia national futsal team represents Catalonia in international futsal competitions organized by AMF and UEFS. It is controlled by the Catalonia Futsal Federation.
The Australia national futsal team, nicknamed the Futsalroos, represents Australia in men's international futsal. The team is controlled by the governing body for soccer in Australia, Football Australia, which is currently a member of both the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the regional ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since leaving the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) in 2006. The team's official nickname is the Futsalroos.
The World Futsal Association (AMF) is the governing body of futsal for both fully and non-independent states or regions, headquartered in Asuncion, Paraguay. It was founded on 25 July 1971 as the International Futsal Federation (FIFUSA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; on 1 December 2002, the organization was replaced, changed its name to Spanish version Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF).
The Italian Football Sala Federation (acronym of FIFS} is the Italian sports federation that promotes nationally the Football Sala, indoor soccer or futsal, played with the Rules of the Asociación Mundial de Futsal. It organizes national, international and friendly tournaments for national and club teams / representatives, amateur events and competitions for the disabled. He also organized the Topolino Trophy five times, in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company Italia, as well as the Mediterranean Cup and the Mundialito Cup. It is based in Milan and the current President is Axel Paderni, in office since July 2009. It is the only Italian sports federation recognized by the Asociación Mundial de Futsal and, therefore, the only one authorized to use international trademarks and logos.
Rugby Europe is the administrative body for rugby union in Europe. It was formed in 1999 to promote, develop, organise, and administer the game of rugby in Europe under the authority of World Rugby. However, it is not responsible for the organisation of the Six Nations Championship or the competitions run by European Professional Club Rugby.

The 2017 AMF Futsal Women's World Cup, also known as the Mundial AMF Futsal Femenino 2017, was the third edition of the AMF Futsal Women's World Cup. The tournament was held in Balaguer, Catalonia from 19 to 25 November 2017. Twelve national teams from all confederations participated in the tournament including: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Catalonia, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, France, Italy, Paraguay, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States.
