Gregory Samantha Rosenthal [1] (born January 24, 1983) is an American historian, activist, and author. She serves on the faculty, as Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of the Public History Concentration, at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. She is the co-founder of the Southwest Virginia LGBTQ+ History Project. Rosenthal has written two books, Beyond Hawaiʻi: Native Labor in the Pacific World and Living Queer History: Remembrance and Belonging in a Southern City. She serves on the governing board of the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History and on the editorial board of The Public Historian .
Rosenthal was born on January 24, 1983, in a suburb of Schenectady, New York. [2] Her father, Kimmo Rosenthal, was a mathematics professor at Union College and her mother, Robin Rosenthal, is an artist. [3] [4] She started playing the piano at the age of seven, and continued musical lessons throughout her childhood and teenage years, branching into the french horn and vocal training. [2]
She attended the California Institute of the Arts for a year, to study music composition, before transferring to Bates College, where she also majored in music. [2] While a student at Bates, Rosenthal was a member of a student anarchy group and was active in student protests and anti-government political organizing. [2] She was arrested a few times for protesting the policies of the Bush Administration, the War in Afghanistan, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. [2] Rosenthal graduated from Bates in 2005. [2] She earned a doctoral degree from Stony Brook University in 2015, studying environmentalism. [5] [6] she was awarded the Rachel Carson Prize for Best Dissertation from the American Society for Environmental History for her dissertation, Hawaiians who Left Hawai’i: Work, Body, and Environment in the Pacific World, 1786-1876. In 2015, Rosenthal co-founded the Southwest Virginia LGBTQ+ History Project, a queer public history initiative based in Roanoke, Virginia. [7] [8]
She is Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of the Public History Concentration at Roanoke College. in Salem, Virginia. [12] Rosenthal has written two books, Beyond Hawaiʻi: Native Labor in the Pacific World, published in 2018 by University of California Press, and Living Queer History: Remembrance and Belonging in a Southern City, published by University of North Carolina Press in 2021. Rosenthal received awards and honorable mentions for her written work and her work with the Southern Virginia LGBTQ+ History Project from the Oral History Association, the American Society for Environmental History, the Working Class Studies Association, the National Council on Public History, and the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History. Rosenthal is a queer transgender woman and uses both feminine and non-binary pronouns. [7] She came out as a transgender woman shortly after moving to Roanoke, Virginia in 2015. [16] [17] Prior to transitioning, she had been married to a woman. [8] [18]
The LGBTQ community is a loosely defined grouping of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning individuals united by a common culture and social movements. These communities generally celebrate pride, diversity, individuality, and sexuality. LGBTQ activists and sociologists see LGBTQ community-building as a counterweight to heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, sexualism, and conformist pressures that exist in the larger society. Rev. Trinity Ordoña is a lesbian Filipino-American college teacher, activist, community organizer, and ordained minister currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is notable for her grassroots work on intersectional social justice. Her activism includes issues of voice and visibility for Asian/Pacific gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals and their families, Lesbians of color, and survivors of sexual abuse. Her works include her dissertation Coming Out Together: an ethnohistory of the Asian and Pacific Islander queer women's and transgendered people's movement of San Francisco, as well as various interviews and articles published in anthologies like Filipino Americans: Transformation and Identity and Asian/Pacific Islander American Women: A Historical Anthology. She co-founded Asian and Pacific Islander Family Pride (APIFP), which "[sustains] support networks for API families with members who are LGBTQ," founded Healing for Change, "a CCSF student organization that sponsors campus-community healing events directed to survivors of violence and abuse," and is currently an instructor in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies Department at City College of San Francisco.
Queer erasure refers to the tendency to intentionally or unintentionally remove LGBT groups or people from record, or downplay their significance, which includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. This erasure can be found in a number of written and oral texts, including popular and scholarly texts.
Dr. Kim Fountain is the Deputy CEO of The San Diego LGBT Community Center. She was previously the Chief Operating Officer of the Center on Halsted, the Midwest's largest LGBTQ+ community center, located in Chicago, Illinois,. the executive director of the Pride Center of Vermont and the co-director for the New York City Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. Fountain has served on the New York State Crime Victims Board and is a trainer for the Office of Victims of Crime and the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs' Reports Committee. She serves on the board of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum.
Susan Ruth Rankin is an American academic specializing in higher education policy and queer studies. She was a member of the faculty and administration at Pennsylvania State University from 1979 to 2013. Rankin is recognized as a prominent figure in the LGBTQ sports movement and was one of the first openly lesbian NCAA Division I coaches.
