GSP Atlas is a four-legged jack-up rig, cantilever type with self-elevating unit operated by Grup Servicii Petroliere.
GSP Atlas drilling rig was designed by Sonnat Offshore and was built in the Galaţi Shipyard in 1987. [1] The rig was upgraded in 2007.
GSP Atlas has a length of 52.42 metres (172.0 ft), breadth of 40.8 metres (134 ft), depth of 6.4 metres (21 ft) and draft of 9.75 metres (32.0 ft), . It has a maximum drilling depth of 7,620 metres (25,000 ft) and it can at a water depth of 91 metres (300 ft). [1] As a drilling rig, GSP Atlas is equipped with advanced drilling equipment and has to meet strict levels of certification under international law. GSP Atlas is able to maneuver with its own engines (to counter drift and ocean currents), but for long-distance relocation it must be moved by specialist tugboats. The rig is capable of withstanding severe sea conditions, including waves of 12 metres (39 ft).
An oil platform, offshore platform, or offshore drilling rig is a large structure with facilities for well drilling to explore, extract, store, and process petroleum and natural gas which lies in rock formations beneath the seabed. Many oil platforms will also contain facilities to accommodate their workforce. Most commonly, oil platforms engage in activities on the continental shelf, though they can also be used in lakes, inshore waters and inland seas. Depending on the circumstances, the platform may be fixed to the ocean floor, may consist of an artificial island, or may float. Remote subsea wells may also be connected to a platform by flow lines and by umbilical connections. These sub-sea solutions may consist of one or more subsea wells, or of one or more manifold centres for multiple wells.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970 using the Uralmash-4E, and later the Uralmash-15000 series drilling rig. Boreholes were drilled by branching from a central hole. The deepest, SG-3, reached 12,262 metres in 1989 and is the deepest artificial point on Earth, as of December 2019. The borehole is 23 centimetres (9 in) in diameter.
The Sakhalin-I project, a sister project to Sakhalin-II, is a consortium for production of oil and gas on Sakhalin Island and immediately offshore. It operates three fields in the Okhotsk Sea: Chayvo, Odoptu and Arkutun-Dagi.
