Gabriela "Gigi" Coletta is an American politician who represents District 1 on the Boston City Council. [1] She was first elected on May 3,2022. [2] Prior to being elected to the Boston City Councilor,Gabriela Coletta served as Chief of Staff for former City Councilor Lydia Edwards until 2021 and then went on to serve as External Relations Manager for the New England Aquarium.
Coletta was raised by community advocates in East Boston,and grew up attending civic association meetings,neighborhood events,and multiple protests against airport runway expansion with her mom,Nina.
Through her time as a public servant,Coletta has centered and amplified the lived experiences of those systemically overlooked in every policy discussion,constituent case,and civic engagement initiative. She spent the entirety of her tenure in the neighborhoods of Charlestown,East Boston,and the North End understanding constituents' concerns to build bridges between differing populations.
Before becoming Boston City Councilor for District 1,she led the New England Aquarium’s efforts around achieving a resilient,accessible,and inclusive downtown waterfront for all as their External Relations Manager. She has worked diligently to ensure the waterfront remains welcoming for all Bostonians by expanding access to the Aquarium and its home on Central Wharf for BIPOC and non-English speaking individuals and families.
Gabriela has worked to advance and empower women by building pipelines to leadership across the Commonwealth. As Associate Director of the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus (MWPC),she furthered MWPC’s mission to recruit,elect,and train women to run for office across Massachusetts while creating strategies to elect endorsed candidates for its Political Action Committee. Gabriela is also a frequent guest trainer for Emerge Massachusetts,where she advises women seeking to run for office or manage campaigns for female candidates.
As Campaign Manager for Councilor Edwards successful 2017 campaign,Gabriela activated and mobilized a grassroots campaign consisting of a broad coalition of residents,unions,volunteers,and advocacy groups numbering over 500 people - all of whom felt disenfranchised by the political establishment - to elect the first African-American woman to represent us on the Boston City Council. Gabriela was State Representative Adrian Madaro's (D-East Boston) Community Liaison where she sat shoulder-to-shoulder with community members for years listening and learning about their priorities. Prior to that,she was his field director during his successful and contentious 2015 special election campaign. She was elected as the Democratic State Committeewoman for the 1st Suffolk and Middlesex district in 2016 and to the Ward 1 Democratic Committee in 2020.
Gabriela is a proud product of four Boston Public Schools and graduated from Boston Latin Academy. She received a degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Boston as well as a minor in Human Rights. She currently lives in East Boston with her partner,Sebastian Zapata. In her spare time,she loves to cook dishes that honor her Italian and Mexican heritage. [3]
Gabriela Coletta ran in a special election campaign against Tania del Rio to fill in former City Councilor Lydia Edwards seat. Voter turnout in the special election was low with only 4,923 ballots being cast;Coletta garnered about 57% of the votes,Del Rio received 33%,and Jorge Mendoza,who ran as a write-in candidate,got 10% of the votes. [4] During her campaign,Coletta prioritized the need for more affordable housing in Boston's North End,East Boston and Charlestown neighborhoods. [5]
As a City Councilor,Coletta started an anti-trash initiative in District 1. The initiative sought to reduce litter by increasing access to trash barrels,expanding civic waste awareness,and called for investments in funding for more community waste clean-ups. [6]
Coletta ran unopposed for re-election in 2023. [7] She received 94.7% of the vote. [8]
Somerville is a city located directly to the northwest of Boston,and north of Cambridge,in Middlesex County,Massachusetts,United States. As of the 2020 United States Census,the city had a total population of 81,045 people. With an area of 4.12 square miles (10.7 km2),the city has a density of 19,671/sq mi (7,595/km2),making it the most densely populated municipality in New England and the 19th most densely populated incorporated municipality in the country. Somerville was established as a town in 1842,when it was separated from Charlestown. In 2006,the city was named the best-run city in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe. In 1972,2009,and 2015,the city received the All-America City Award. It is home to Tufts University,which has its campus along the Somerville and Medford border.
East Boston,nicknamed Eastie,is a neighborhood of Boston,Massachusetts that was annexed by the city of Boston in 1637. Neighboring communities include Winthrop,Revere,and Chelsea. It is separated from the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown and downtown Boston by Boston Harbor. The footprint of the East Boston neighborhood as it is known today was created in the 1940s by connecting five of the inner harbor islands using land fill. Logan International Airport is located in East Boston,connecting Boston to domestic and international locations.
Boston Harborwalk is a public walkway that follows the edge of piers,wharves,beaches,and shoreline around Boston Harbor. When fully completed it will extend a distance of 47 miles (76 km) from East Boston to the Neponset River.
Ayanna Soyini Pressley is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district since 2019. This district includes the northern three quarters of Boston,most of Cambridge,parts of Milton,as well as all of Chelsea,Everett,Randolph,and Somerville. Before serving in the United States House of Representatives,Pressley served as an at-large member of the Boston City Council from 2010 through 2019. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018 after she defeated the ten-term incumbent Mike Capuano in the Democratic primary election for Massachusetts' 7th congressional district and ran unopposed in the general election. Pressley was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council and the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Pressley is a member of "The Squad",a group of progressive Congress members.
Althea Garrison is an American politician from Boston,Massachusetts who previously served a single term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1993–1995) and a partial term as an at-large councilor on the Boston City Council (2019–2020). She is considered the earliest transgender person known to have been elected to a state legislature in the United States. She was outed against her will by the Boston Herald after her 1992 election. She is a perennial candidate,having been an unsuccessful candidate for political office more than forty times.

Michelle Wu is an American politician serving as the mayor of Boston,Massachusetts,since 2021. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants,she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council,from 2014 to 2021,and acted as its president from 2016–2018. She is the first woman and first non-white person to have been elected mayor of Boston. At 36 years of age,she is also the youngest individual to have been elected to the position in nearly a century. Wu is a member of the Democratic Party.
Andrea Joy Campbell is an American lawyer and politician who is serving as the attorney general of Massachusetts. Campbell is a former member of the Boston City Council. On the city council,she represented District 4,which includes parts of Boston's Dorchester,Mattapan,Jamaica Plain,and Roslindale neighborhoods. A member of the Democratic Party,she was first elected to the council in November 2015 and assumed office in January 2016. She served as president of the council from January 2018 until January 2020. Campbell unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Boston in 2021,placing third in the nonpartisan primary election behind Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu,the latter of whom would go on to win the general election.
Boston City Council elections were held on November 2,1993. All thirteen seats were contested in the general election,while ten seats had also been contested in the preliminary election held on September 21,1993.
Elizabeth Miranda is a Cape Verdean-American community organizer and politician. She is a state senator representing the Massachusetts Senate's 2nd Suffolk district after winning a five-way Democratic Primary Election,and advancing to an uncontested race in the 2022 Massachusetts general election. Prior to that,since January 2019,Miranda had served as the Democratic Massachusetts State Representative for the Fifth Suffolk district. Her district comprises parts of the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. She is a member of the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus.
Boston City Council elections were held on November 5,2019. Nomination forms could be submitted starting April 17,and candidates had a filing deadline of May 21. A preliminary election was held on September 24. By law,Boston municipal elections are nonpartisan—candidates do not represent a specific political party.
Lydia Marie Edwards is an American attorney and politician. She served as a member of the Boston City Council from the 1st district from 2018 to 2022 and has served as a member of the Massachusetts Senate from the 1st Suffolk and Middlesex district since 2022. She resigned from the Boston City Council at the end of April 2022.
Priscilla MacKenzie "Kenzie" Bok is the administrator of the Boston Housing Authority. She previously served as a member of the Boston City Council,representing District 8,which includes Back Bay,Beacon Hill,Fenway–Kenmore,Mission Hill,and the West End. She is also a lecturer on Social Studies at Harvard University,where she teaches intellectual history and history of philosophy. Bok was elected to the City Council in the November 2019 election. In 2023,Mayor Michelle Wu appointed Bok to become the head of the Boston Housing Authority.
Annissa Essaibi George is an American politician who served as an at-large member of the Boston City Council. First elected in 2015,she served on the council from 2016 to 2022. She was a candidate in the 2021 Boston mayoral election. She placed second in the nonpartisan primary,but was defeated in the general election by fellow city councilor Michelle Wu. Since November 2022,Essaibi George has served as the president of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit organization Big Sister Boston.
Kim Michelle Janey is an American politician and community organizer who served as acting mayor of Boston for eight months in 2021. She served as president of the Boston City Council from 2020 to 2022,and as a member of the council from the 7th district from 2018 to 2022. As a black woman,her tenure as acting mayor made her the first woman and the first person of color to lead the city.
The 2021 Boston mayoral election was held on Tuesday,November 2,2021,to elect the mayor of Boston,Massachusetts. Incumbent mayor Marty Walsh was eligible to seek a third term. However,he resigned as mayor on March 22,2021,after being confirmed as secretary of labor in the Cabinet of Joe Biden. This left the Boston City Council president,at the time Kim Janey,to hold the role of acting mayor until the victor of the election would take office.

Ruthzee Louijeune is an American politician and lawyer serving as president of the Boston City Council.
