Sharon Durkan is an American politician and political consultant currently serving as a member of the Boston City Council,representing its 8th district. She has held that office since August 2023.
Durkan grew up in the U.S. state of Georgia. Durkan attended Smith College in Northampton,Massachusetts. [1]
While in college,Durkan became the finance director for State Senator Eric Lesser. In 2015,shortly after graduating college,she began working for the reelection campaign of then-City Councilor Michelle Wu. [1] She came to be an experienced political consultant. [1] [2] She worked as the Massachusetts Finance Director for U.S. Senator Ed Markey's 2020 reelection campaign. [3] She taught training sessions in the Emerge Massachusetts program. [1] She also took the position of chair of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee. [1]
Durkan represents District 8 on the Boston City Council. The district covers some of the most densely-populated areas of the city. It includes portions of Back Bay,Fenway,West End,Mission Hill and Beacon Hill. [2] [3]
On July 25,at the age of 32,Durkan was elected to the Boston City Council in a special election to fill the remainder of the term vacated by Kenzie Bok when Bok became the head of the Boston Housing Authority. Durkan's opponent had been Montez Haywood,a longtime prosecutor at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. The campaign was Durkan's first campaign for public office. Durkan won more than 70% of the vote,with 29% going to Haywood and a half-percent going to write-in votes. Haywood had previously run for the seat in 2019,having performed weakly in that election. Durkan's campaign was centered on issues related to transportation,housing,mental healthcare,and climate change. [1] Durkan received a plethora of endorsements from notable politicians,including Senator Ed Markey, [2] Mayor Michelle Wu,At-Large City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune [1] She also received the endorsement of her predecessor,Kenzie Bok. [4] Durkan strongly outperformed her opponent in fundraising. [1]

At a City Council meeting early October,Durkan and Frank Baker opposed holding an immediate vote on a resolution proposed at the meeting by Tania Fernandes Anderson related to the Israel–Hamas war. Unlike a different proposed resolution related to the conflict that was being discussed at the meeting,Fernandes Anderson's resolution was not focused on condemning the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel,and instead centered on calling for a ceasefire. [6] Fernandes Anderson's resolution characterized the attack as a "military operation" rather than an act of terrorism. [7] The resolution was referred to the committee of the whole instead of being voted on. [6]
Durkan faced Montez Haywood again in a November 2023 election for a full term. [2] The election map used for this election differed from that of the August special election,as it used a map redistricted to reflect the results of the 2020 United States Census. [3] Durkan again received Mayor Wu's endorsement. [8] Durkan won reelection,again capturing more than 70 percent of the vote. [9] Durkan serves as chair of the council's Committee on Planning,Development,&Transportation. [10]
In February 2024,Durkan proposed the idea of having the city license official Boston merchandise as a means of generating revenue both for the city government and small businesses in the city. Durkan pointed to a similar venture that New York City had launched more than a decade prior. Jim Rooney (the CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce) lent his tentative personal support to Durkan's proposal,conditioning full support on small businesses being consulted. [11]

Ayanna Soyini Pressley is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district since 2019. This district includes the northern three quarters of Boston,most of Cambridge,parts of Milton,as well as all of Chelsea,Everett,Randolph,and Somerville. Before serving in the United States House of Representatives,Pressley served as an at-large member of the Boston City Council from 2010 through 2019. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018 after she defeated the ten-term incumbent Mike Capuano in the Democratic primary election for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district and ran unopposed in the general election. Pressley was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council and the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Pressley is a member of "The Squad",a group of progressive Congress members.
Michelle Wu is an American politician serving as the mayor of Boston,Massachusetts,since 2021. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants,she was the first Asian American woman to serve on the Boston City Council,from 2014 to 2021,and acted as its president from 2016–2018. She is the first woman and first non-white person to have been elected mayor of Boston. At 36 years of age,she is also the youngest individual to have been elected to the position in nearly a century. Wu is a member of the Democratic Party.
The 2020 United States Senate election in Massachusetts was held on November 3,2020,to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,concurrently with the 2020 U.S. presidential election,as well as elections to the United States Senate in other states,elections to the United States House of Representatives,and various state and local elections. On September 1,incumbent senator Ed Markey defeated U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy III in a competitive primary for the Democratic nomination,and Kevin O'Connor defeated Shiva Ayyadurai for the Republican nomination. Markey went on to win the general election with 66.2% of the vote,and was thus re-elected to a second full term in a landslide.
Andrea Joy Campbell is an American lawyer and politician who is serving as the attorney general of Massachusetts. Campbell is a former member of the Boston City Council. On the city council,she represented District 4,which includes parts of Boston's Dorchester,Mattapan,Jamaica Plain,and Roslindale neighborhoods. A member of the Democratic Party,she was first elected to the council in November 2015 and assumed office in January 2016. She served as president of the council from January 2018 until January 2020. Campbell unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Boston in 2021,placing third in the nonpartisan primary election behind Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu,the latter of whom would go on to win the general election.

A preliminary election was held on September 24. By law,Boston municipal elections are nonpartisan—candidates do not represent a specific political party.
The 2024 United States Senate election in Massachusetts will be held on November 5,2024,to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the state of Massachusetts. Primary elections will take place on September 3,2024. Incumbent Senator Elizabeth Warren was first elected in 2012,defeating incumbent Republican Scott Brown. Warren was re-elected with 60.3% of the vote in 2018 and is seeking a third term in office. Primary elections will be held on September 3.
Priscilla MacKenzie "Kenzie" Bok is the administrator of the Boston Housing Authority. She previously served as a member of the Boston City Council,representing District 8,which includes Back Bay,Beacon Hill,Fenway–Kenmore,Mission Hill,and the West End. She is also a lecturer on Social Studies at Harvard University,where she teaches intellectual history and history of philosophy. Bok was elected to the City Council in the November 2019 election. In 2023,Mayor Michelle Wu appointed Bok to become the head of the Boston Housing Authority.

The 2021 Boston mayoral election was held on Tuesday,November 2,2021,to elect the mayor of Boston,Massachusetts. Incumbent mayor Marty Walsh was eligible to seek a third term. However,he resigned as mayor on March 22,2021,after being confirmed as secretary of labor in the Cabinet of Joe Biden. This left the Boston City Council president,at the time Kim Janey,to hold the role of acting mayor until the victor of the election would take office.
