Gaggara is a 2008 Indian Tulu-language drama film directed by Shivadhwaj Shetty and starring Suchendra Prasad and Jayasheela. [2] The film is based on Bhoothakola, [3] and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tulu. [4] The film was notably the first Tulu film to be screened at the International Film Festival of India in 2009 and the Bengaluru International Film Festival in 2011. [5] [6]

Plot

Shankara is the son of a Kola performer, which has become a dying tradition. He is a government school teacher and is hesitant to perform the ritual since the modern day society shuns the Kola community (who are considered untouchables). He is from a poor family and his father is a drunkard who wastes money.

Eventually, Shankara performs Kola for the first time in order to keep the dying tradition alive. [6]

The film was shot in seven days in Palli, a village near Karkala in Udupi district. [1]

Release

Upon release, the film was a box office failure due to being a socially oriented film. [7] The film was not released on CDs. [7]

The Tulu people or Tuluvas are an ethno-linguistic and ethno-cultural group from Southern India. The Shivalli Brahmins are a Hindu Brahmin community in Karnataka. They are divided into two groups, the first of who follow the Dvaita philosophy founded by the Vaishnava saint Madhvacharya of Udupi are called Shivalli Madhva Brahmins, and the second of who follow the Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankara are known as Shivalli Smartha Brahmins. Majority of Shivalli Brahmins are Madhvas and only a few of them are Smarthas.

Tulu cinema, also known as Coastalwood, is a part of Indian cinema. The Tulu film industry produces five to seven films annually. The first Tulu film was Enna Thangadi released in 1971. Ranganayaki is a 2019 Indian Kannada drama film written and directed by Dayal Padmanabhan. The film was produced by S. V. Narayan under his banner S.V. Entertainment. It features Aditi Prabhudeva and MG Srinivas along with Trivikram, who is making his debut in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Lasya Nagraj, Suchendra Prasad and Chakravthy Chandrachud. The score and soundtrack for the film is by Manikanth Kadri and the cinematography is by Rakesh B. The editing of the film was done by Sunil Kashyap H. N. The film before getting released was selected to the Panorama Section of the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), and is the only Kannada film that has been selected.

Neetha Ashok is an Indian actress primarily known for her work in Kannada films. She made her acting debut with the Tulu film Jabardasth Shankara (2019). Neetha gained recognition with her Kannada debut Vikrant Rona (2022).
