Gaia Girace (born 21 October 2003) is an Italian actress. She is best known for her role as Raffaella "Lila" Cerullo in the HBO coming-of-age television series My Brilliant Friend. [1]
Gaia Girace grew up in Vico Equense, Naples. [2] Her father is a lawyer and her mother works in insurance. [3] She attended the Liceo Classico Publio Virgilio in Meta, [4] and was cast in My Brilliant Friend in her first year. [5]
At the age of 13, Girace began attending acting classes, citing a need to express herself. Soon after, she auditioned for My Brilliant Friend, which had been casting actresses from Naples. [6] She underwent 7 months of auditions [3] before being chosen to play Lila Cerullo out of 10,000 girls. [5]

The English-language titles of the novels are My Brilliant Friend (2012), The Story of a New Name (2013), Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (2014), and The Story of the Lost Child (2015). In the original Italian edition, the whole series bears the title of the first novel L'amica geniale. The series has been characterized as a bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story. In an interview in Harper's Magazine, Elena Ferrante has stated that she considers the four books to be "a single novel" published serially for reasons of length and duration.
