The Gainesville Mall was the first enclosed shopping mall in Gainesville, Florida. It was located on the northwest corner of the intersection of NW 13th Street (US 441) and NW 23rd Avenue and operated from Fall 1967 to 1993. [1] [2]
The Gainesville Mall closed permanently in 1993 after years of decline and was initially replaced with a Kmart. The Kmart was demolished in 2004 and replaced by a Lowe's that opened in 2006 and still resides there. [1] [3]
When the mall opened in 1967, it has two anchors: Sears on the south side, and Tampa-based Maas Brothers on the north side. The mall played a major role in establishing a retail corridor along NW 13th Street. This retail corridor would end up replacing downtown Gainesville as the area's commercial center. [2]
In 1977, The Oaks Mall, a larger indoor mall, opened across town near Interstate 75. Sears would relocate to its store to The Oaks Mall in 1983, leaving Maas Brothers as the only anchor at the Gainesville Mall. [4]
In 1991, Maas Brothers was merged with Burdines by the parent company of the two stores. Despite the fact that Burdines operated a store at The Oaks Mall since 1983, the company retained its store at the Gainesville Mall for a few years. The Maas Brothers store was officially rebranded as Burdines on October 20, 1991. [5]
WestShore Plaza is a shopping mall located in the Westshore business district of Tampa, Florida, developed by Albert L. Manley of Boston, MA. WestShore Plaza was opened in 1967 and was touted as Tampa's first shopping center that was fully air-conditioned. WestShore houses many specialty shops including Francesca's Collection, LOFT, New Balance, H&M, Old Navy, Sunglass Hut, and more. The property is owned and managed by Washington Prime Group.
University Mall, previously University Square Mall, is a shopping mall located near the University of South Florida, just north of the city limits of Tampa on Fowler Avenue. Maas Brothers was a leading Tampa, Florida department store founded by Abe and Isaac Maas in 1886 that grew from a small 23-by-90-foot store to a chain of 39 stores throughout the Gulf Coast of Florida. The Maas Brothers brand went defunct in 1991 when it was consolidated into the Burdines department store chain, which in turn merged with Macy's in 2005.

Coastland Center is a shopping mall located in Naples, Florida. Opened in 1976, it features Macy's, JCPenney, and Dillard's as its anchors. It hosts a food court and many other specialty stores. The food court is the main attraction. The mall itself is situated on just one floor, but all of the anchor stores have two floors. In 2019 the former Sears got demolished and rebuilt to a new movie theater CMX CinéBistro and Uncle Julio’s opened in 2022 in the former Sears parking lot with Twin Peaks sport bar and restaurant in 2023.
