Gareth Terence John Townsend (born 28 June 1968) played first-class and List A cricket for Somerset from 1990 to 1992. [1] He later played List A cricket for Devon,Surrey and the Minor Counties. He was born at Tiverton,Devon.
Townsend was a right-handed opening batsman. He made an impressive second eleven debut for Somerset as a 19-year-old in 1987,scoring 81 and 115 not out in the match against Hampshire 2nds. [2] He continued to score well in second eleven matches and made his first-class debut in a couple of games in the 1990 season. He was not successful in these,but in a 55-over one-day match against the Sri Lankans he scored 77,which was to remain his highest List A score. [3] He played a few further first-class and List A matches for Somerset in 1991 and in the first-class game against the 1991 Sri Lankans he made 53,his highest first-class score and shared a first-wicket partnership of 158 with Jimmy Cook. [4] In 1992,he was given a greater chance in the Somerset first-team,playing in seven first-class games,but though he made useful runs he failed to reach 50 in any innings and at the end of the 1992 season his engagement with Somerset came to an end.
From 1994,Townsend started playing regularly for Devon,his native county,and appearing most seasons up to 2001 in one or two limited overs matches in the NatWest Trophy. His highest score in these games was 60 against Shropshire in 2001. [5] In addition to matches for Devon,he also appeared for the Minor Counties representative side in the Benson and Hedges Cup and had one match for Surrey against a Young England side,all of these being limited-overs games.
As of 2012,he is the director of Surrey County Cricket Club's Academy.
The 2006 English cricket season was the 107th in which the County Championship had been an official competition. It included home international series for England against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. England came off a winter with more Test losses than wins,for the first time since 2002-03,but still attained their best series result in India since 1985. The One Day International series against Pakistan and India both ended in losses.
Arthur Frank Irish was a British cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset for one season and Minor Counties cricket for Devon for many years.
Arthur Edward Newton was an English cricketer who played for Somerset in the county's pre-first-class days and then for more than 20 years after the team entered the County Championship in 1891. He also played for Oxford University and for a variety of amateur teams. As a cricketer,he was known as "A. E.",not by his forename.
George Stephen Butler,played first-class cricket for Somerset in one match in 1920 and Minor Counties cricket for Wiltshire from 1920 to 1939. While appearing for Wiltshire,he also played in seven first-class matches,mostly for teams representing the Minor Counties as a whole against touring sides in the 1930s.
Frank Terence Willetts was an English cricketer. A left-handed middle-order batsman,he played first-class and list A cricket for Somerset in the mid-1960s. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Shropshire and Cornwall. Although he was a prolific scorer at second eleven and Minor Counties level,he was not able to establish himself in first-class cricket.
Julian George Wyatt is a former cricketer who played first-class and List A cricket for Somerset County Cricket Club between 1983 and 1989. Wyatt was born in 1963 at Paulton,Somerset and educated at Wells Cathedral School.
Mervyn Llewellyn Hill was a Welsh first-class cricket wicketkeeper and batsman for Somerset between 1921 and 1932,and also appeared in matches for Glamorgan and Cambridge University. He was also a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) team that toured India in 1926–27 and helped lay the foundation for India's entry into Test cricket.
Philip Palmer Hope played first-class cricket for Somerset from 1914 to 1925. He was born at Hartlepool,County Durham,and died at Clifton,Bristol.
