Gary Doty (born February 5,1948) is an American politician from Duluth,Minnesota,and a former mayor of that city.
Doty was born in Duluth to parents Russell and Naomi Doty,and was educated in the public school system there,graduating from Central High School in 1966,before going on to the University of Minnesota Duluth. After graduating in 1970 with a B.S. in education,he was involved with a Young Advocate Program,which entailed work with children from correctional institutions. He also taught in the Duluth Public School system. [1]
In 1974,Doty was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives representing the old District 8A. He served from 1975–1976,and was a member of the Crime Prevention &Corrections,Governmental Operations,and Labor-Management Relations committees. His brother Ralph served as a state senator for the Duluth area during this same time period. [2]
Doty served on the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners during the 1980s.
Doty was elected mayor of Duluth in November 1991,taking office in January 1992. He was subsequently re-elected to two additional four-year terms. He retired from office in January 2004. [3] He was known for his socially conservative and fiscally moderate approach to governing. He was a strong proponent of the Great Lakes Aquarium,opened in 2000,which is the only freshwater aquarium in the U.S. and has required major subsidies from the city of Duluth since its opening. Doty also helped bring the aircraft manufacturing company Cirrus Design to Duluth in 1994,which has gone on to produce some of the world's most popular and innovative light aircraft and has remained one of the city's largest employers since the mid-2000s. Al Doty is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives who represented District 12B,which includes portions of Crow Wing and Morrison counties. A Democrat,he was first elected in 2006 when he defeated three-term Republican incumbent Greg Blaine. He was re-elected in 2008,but was unseated by Republican Mike LeMieur in the 2010 general election.

The Klapmeier brothers,Alan Lee Klapmeier and Dale Edward Klapmeier,are retired American aircraft designers and aviation entrepreneurs who together founded the Cirrus Design Corporation in 1984. Under the leadership of the Klapmeiers,Cirrus was the first aircraft manufacturer to install a whole-plane parachute recovery system as a standard on all its models—designed to lower the airplane safely to the ground in case of an emergency. The device is attributed with saving over 200 lives to date. From the brothers' use of all-composite airframe construction and glass panel cockpits on production aircraft,Cirrus is known for having revolutionized general aviation for modern light aircraft pilots.
Major Scott Douglas Anderson was an American aviator,engineer,outdoor adventurer,and award-winning author. He flew F-16s and instructed pilots for the Air National Guard,and was a general aviation test pilot and flight operations officer. In 1998,he completed the flight-testing of the first certified whole-plane parachute recovery system,the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS),which is credited with saving over 200 lives as standard equipment on Duluth,Minnesota-based Cirrus Aircraft's line of single-engine light aircraft.
