Gary Formato (born 19 November 1974) [1] is a South African former racing driver and current director and co-founder of the Sasol GTC Championship, alongside Vic Maharaj.

He is most notable for his 4 wins in the FIA Sportscar Championship and European Le Mans Series between 1998 and 2001. [2] Gary also competed in the 1995 International Formula 3000 Championship for the Durango team, starting all eight races but scoring no points. [3] Formato also started the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times between 1999 and 2001 but did not finish a race.

Sportscar career

1998

Formato drove the #19 Solution F Riley & Scott MKIII, [4] getting a 3rd place during the first round in Barcelona behind two Ferrari 333 SPs [5] and a win during the season finale in Kyalami, where him and teammate Jerome Policand beat the #61 Dyson Racing of James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger in second place, and the #60 Risi Competitzione of Eric van de Poele and Wayne Taylor in third. Road Atlanta is a 2.540 mi (4.088 km) road course located just north of Braselton, Georgia, United States. The facility is utilized for a wide variety of events, including professional and amateur sports car and motorcycle races, racing and driving schools, corporate programs and testing for motorsports teams. The track has 12 turns, including the famous "esses" between turns three and five; and Turn 12, a downhill, diving turn. The track is owned by IMSA Holdings, LLC through its subsidiary Road Atlanta, LLC, and is the home to the Petit Le Mans, as well as AMA motorcycle racing, and smaller events throughout the year. Michelin acquired naming rights to the facility in 2018.

Risi Competizione is an Italo-American auto racing Ferrari factory-backed team formed by Giuseppe Risi in 1997. Initially, the team had a partnership with Doyle Racing using the name Doyle-Risi Racing, but soon Giuseppe Risi took full control of the project and it was rebranded with its current name in 2000. Risi Competizione has won races and championships in the IMSA GT championship, American Le Mans Series, and Rolex Sports Car Series, as well as earning three class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998, 2008 and 2009. Much of Risi Competizione's success has come through the use of Ferrari machines.

Team Taisan is a Japanese auto racing team founded in 1983 by Yasutsune "Ricky" Chiba and owned by the Taisan Industrial Company. Most active in the Super GT Series, formerly known as the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC), Taisan has been involved in all but one season from 1994 to 2018, taking a sabbatical in 2015. During that time they have won eight team championships and four drivers championships, representing manufacturers Ferrari, Porsche, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan, and Audi. Team Taisan has also participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning their class on their debut in 2000. Richard Antony Dean is a former British Racing Driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans GT2 class in 2006. In 2010, Richard Dean founded the sports car racing team United Autosports with Zak Brown.

The Nissan Skyline Turbo C is a Group C prototype sports car developed by Garage Le Mans for the 1983 All Japan Endurance Championship and Fuji Long Distance Series. While used as a marketing tool for the R30 Skyline, the Skyline Turbo C has no parts commonality or shared origin with the street car. The engine is equipped with Nissan's LZ20B type.
