Gbomblora is a village in the province of Poni in the Sud-Ouest Region of Burkina Faso. It is the capital of Gbomblora Department.

Geography

Gbomblora is located roughly 12 kilometers to the south east of the town of Gaoua. It is connected to the route nationale 11.

History

In February 2022, Gbomblora was scene of a deadly explosion at a gold mine. [1]

Economy

Since 2015, the town (like all that are part of the Gbomblora Department) has been connected to the national electricity network as part of the electrification of Noumbiel. [2]

Demographics

In 2006, the population was 169. [3]

Health and education

Gbomblora has a health and social promotion center (CSPS) while the regional hospital center (CHR) of the province is located in Gaoua. [4]

The ruins of Loropéni are a medieval heritage site near the town of Loropéni in southern Burkina Faso. They were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009. These ruins were the country's first World Heritage site. The site, which spans 1.113 hectares, includes an array of stone walls that comprised a medieval fortress, the best preserved of ten in the area. They date back at least a thousand years. The settlement was occupied by the Lohron or Kulango people and prospered from the trans-Saharan gold trade, reaching its height between the 14th and 17th centuries. It was abandoned in the early 19th century.

In early July 2022, two separate massacres occurred in Bourasso, Kossi Province and Namissiguima Department, Yatenga Province in Burkina Faso. The massacre in Bourasso killed 22 people, and the one in Namissiguima killed 12.
