Gene Field Foster (January 17, 1917 - February 24, 1983) was an American carpenter, artist, anthropologist, ornitholigist, and early Glen Canyon river runner.
Gene Field Foster was born in Tomahawk, Wisconsin to Elmer David and Ruth Gray (Field) Foster. Foster was named for her mother's father, poet and journalist Eugene Field and Ruth Foster chose the masculine spelling for her daughter’s name. [1]
Foster’s father served in World War I and on his return to civilian life he operated Foster Lumber Company and taught his daughter carpentry. Foster attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to New York City where she made drawings for ad agencies before she established her own business. During this time she studied photography. In World War II Foster worked in a Connecticut munitions plant where she developed pneumonia. Doctors advised her to go west to regain her health. Foster moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1946. She purchased some land and built a house while supporting herself working as a carpenter. In 1949, Foster moved to Sedona, Arizona and opened her own carpentry company, Foster Wood Shop. [2] [3] [4] [5]
In 1950, Foster was asked by Sedona resident Elmer Purtyman to help with the shuttle for a river trip through Glen Canyon on the Colorado River. When Purtyman showed her film of the river trip she determined to photograph the natural beauty of Glen Canyon. In November of 1952, Foster joined Purtyman and other artists, including Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning, on a 14 day river trip through Glen Canyon. Additional river runners they met on that trip included Batman artist Dick Sprang. [6] [7]
Flagstaff’s Museum of Northern Arizona founders Harold and Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton, along with Museum anthropologist Katharine Bartlett, hired Foster to build picture frames in 1951. Foster and Bartlett developed a personal and professional relationship, purchasing a lot in Flagstaff, Arizona together where Foster built a small home. The house had light for painting and a large storage area for her Glen Canyon equipment. [8]
The Bureau of Reclamation identified a dam-site in lower Glen Canyon in 1921. [9] The reservoir created by the dam would inundate countless archeological sites documenting thousands of years of indigenous occupation of Glen Canyon. Glen Canyon lacked extensive archeological exploration. Foster began to photograph and sketch sites along the Colorado River and in the side canyons of Glen Canyon during her first Glen Canyon river trip in the spring 1952. She wrote a paper on her findings in Glen Canyon that included sketches of petroglyphs and habitation sites. In her summary published in the Museum's Plateau Magazine of October 1952, she wrote: “That this incredibly lovely, unspoiled and almost entirely unexplored canyon country – a wilderness frontier for many kinds of scientific inquiry – would be flooded and destroyed was a sickening prospect.” [10]
The Bureau of Reclamation received funding for the construction of Glen Canyon Dam in 1956 [11] . Foster’s publications contributed to the decision to explore and document Glen Canyon archeology in a project supported by the Museum of Northern Arizona. [12] The Bureau of Reclamation channeled funds to the National Park Service for the project. Foster received a contract to record archaeological sites on the left bank of the Colorado River between the confluence of the San Juan River and Navajo Canyon, a distance of 52 miles. [13] Foster and Bartlet concentrated on the assigned area recording sites in this area before they were flooded. [14] [15]
Foster oversaw three river trips in Glen Canyon between April and October 1957 with a volunteer crew that included Bartlett, research associate David M. Brugge, and Flagstaff resident Guy Wilson. [16] When the NPS Glen Canyon Project got underway, however, Foster was not involved in the Museum’s fieldwork and her manuscript based on the 1957 fieldwork remains unpublished. [17]
In the early 1960s, Grand Canyon National Park hired Foster to create a painting of the Tusayan Ruins for a museum exhibit. Her large tempura canvas was displayed in a small museum adjacent to the Pueblo.
In the 1960s and 1970s Foster studied the Northern Arizona Pinyon jay population. She set up a feeding station in her backyard in Flagstaff and instituted a banding program, hiring neighborhood highschool students to document the behavior of the birds. She worked closely with graduate students at Northern Arizona University, helping them with research for their theses and dissertations pertaining to the Pinyon jay.
In later years, Foster experienced extreme mood swings. [18] Her physical health never fully recovered from pneumonia, and she was a lifelong smoker. She died in 1983 at the age of 66 in Flagstaff and is buried in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. [19]
The Gene Field Foster Papers, including her unpublished manuscript and over 500 photographs of Glen Canyon, are preserved at the Museum of Northern Arizona archives in Flagstaff, Arizona. [20]

The Coconino National Forest is a 1.856-million acre United States National Forest located in northern Arizona in the vicinity of Flagstaff, with elevations ranging from 2,600 feet to the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet. Originally established in 1898 as the "San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve", the area was designated a U.S. National Forest by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt on July 2, 1908, when the San Francisco Mountains National Forest Reserve was merged with lands from other surrounding forest reserves to create the Coconino National Forest. Today, the Coconino National Forest contains diverse landscapes, including deserts, ponderosa pine forests, flatlands, mesas, alpine tundra, and ancient volcanic peaks. The forest surrounds the towns of Sedona and Flagstaff and borders four other national forests; the Kaibab National Forest to the west and northwest, the Prescott National Forest to the southwest, the Tonto National Forest to the south, and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the southeast. The forest contains all or parts of nine designated wilderness areas, including the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, which includes the summit of the San Francisco Peaks. The headquarters are in Flagstaff. The Coconino National Forest consists of three districts: Flagstaff Ranger District, Mogollon Rim Ranger District, and Red Rock Ranger District, which have local ranger district offices in Flagstaff, Happy Jack, and Sedona.
Richard W. Sprang was an American comic book artist and penciller, best known for his work on the superhero Batman during the period fans and historians call Golden Age of Comic Books. Sprang was responsible for the 1950 redesign of the Batmobile and the original design of the Riddler, who has appeared in film, television and other media adaptations. Sprang's Batman was notable for his square chin, expressive face and barrel chest.

The Astrogeology Science Center is the entity within the United States Geological Survey concerned with the study of planetary geology and planetary cartography. It is housed in the Shoemaker Building in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Center was established in 1963 by Eugene Merle Shoemaker to provide lunar geologic mapping and to assist in training astronauts destined for the Moon as part of the Apollo program.
Flagstaff station is an Amtrak train station at 1 East Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. The station, formerly an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway depot, doubles as a visitor center and rental-car pickup and is located in downtown Flagstaff. Northern Arizona University is located nearby, as are the Lowell Observatory, Sunset Crater, the Walnut Canyon National Monument, ski resorts and other attractions.
Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton was an American artist, author, educator, ethnographer, and curator. She is one of the principal founders of the Museum of Northern Arizona. She was a member of the Philadelphia Ten, exhibiting at the group's annual shows from 1926 to 1940. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the American Watercolor Society, and the American Federation of Arts. She is known for her advocacy of the arts, Native American rights, and women's rights. For her advocacy of Native American arts, she received a certificate of appreciation from the United States Department of the Interior, Indian Arts and Crafts Board in 1935. In 1982, she was inducted into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame.
Otis Reed "Dock" Marston was an American writer, historian and Grand Canyon river runner who participated in a large number of river-running firsts. Marston was the eighty-third person to successfully complete the water transit of the Grand Canyon. He spent the last thirty years of his life writing his magnum opus on the history of the first 100 Grand Canyon river runners. In researching his book, he amassed a vast collection of material on early river runners in the American Southwest, especially runners of the Green and Colorado Rivers. His collection is housed in the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
Katharine Bartlett (1907–2001) was an American physical anthropologist who worked from 1930 to 1952 as the first curator of the Museum of Northern Arizona, cataloging and organizing the museum's holdings, and then as the museum's librarian until 1974 and archivist until 1981. She participated in a survey of the Navajo Nation's reservation in the Little Colorado River basin and established the cataloging system used by the Glen Canyon Archaeological Project. She was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association and a Fellow of the Society of American Archaeology, as well as the first Fellow of the MNA. Honored in an exhibit of the Smithsonian Institution in 1986 and a recipient of the 1991 Sharlot Hall Award for her contributions to Arizona history, she was posthumously inducted into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame in 2008.
Flagstaff is a city in, and the county seat of, Coconino County in northern Arizona, in the southwestern United States. Established as a modern settlement in 1876 and incorporated as a city in 1928, the land had previously been lived on by native peoples of the southwest, primarily the Sinagua. Mountaineer Antoine Leroux then traveled the area, with Edward Fitzgerald Beale following in his footsteps and establishing a trail through the city in the mid-1800s. With a local spring, a small settlement grew by the wagon road, and the town was dominated by the McMillan, Riordan, and Babbitt families. Focused on agricultural pursuits, these families constructed some historic red stone buildings that still stand today.
