Irving Eugene Foster (March 20, 1942) is a former professional American football running back in the American Football League for the San Diego Chargers. He also was a member of the Edmonton Eskimos and the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League. He played college football at Arizona State University.

Early years

Born in Salem, New Jersey, Foster grew up in Pennsville Township, New Jersey and attended Pennsville Memorial High School. [1] He accepted a football scholarship from Arizona State University, where he played halfback along with wingback Larry Todd. [2]

As a senior, he led the team with 311 rushing yards. He finished his college career with 741 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns, 323 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. He played in the North-South Shrine Game.

Professional career

Foster was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 10th round (78th pick overall) of the 1965 AFL Draft. He was also selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 15th round (201st overall) of the 1965 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he was a reserve fullback behind Keith Lincoln.

In 1966, he was named the starting fullback over Lincoln. In 1970, he appeared in 7 games (2 starts). He was waived on September 2, 1971.

On September 2, 1971, he was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Falcons. He was released on September 13.

On September 20, 1971, he joined the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League on a five-day tryout. In 1973, he missed most of the season after contracting pneumonia, which opened the door for Calvin Harrell to start at running back.

On June 4, 1974, he was traded to the Ottawa Rough Riders in exchange for defensive back Willie McKelton. On August 9, he was placed on the 12-day injury reserve list. He was released on September 10.

The 61st Grey Cup game was played at Toronto's CNE Stadium on November 25, 1973. The Ottawa Rough Riders defeated the Edmonton Eskimos before a crowd of 36,653.

William Michael Tolbert is a former American football fullback. He was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football for Coastal Carolina University. He has also been a member of the Carolina Panthers, where he was a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro. He signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2017 after being released by the Carolina Panthers.

Jimmy Jones was an all-star quarterback in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Jones was a graduate of the University of Southern California (USC). He moved to Canada in 1973, and played for the Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Ottawa Rough Riders, and helped lead the Alouettes to a Grey Cup win in 1974.

Calvin McCarty is a professional Canadian football running back for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played as a tailback until 2014, when he became the starting fullback for the Edmonton Eskimos. McCarty is known for being able to fill many roles at his position, with TSN sportscaster Chris Schultz noting in 2010 that he is a "multi-purpose running back who catches the ball extremely well, blocks well and runs well". He is a champion of the 103rd Grey Cup.

Jerome Messam is a former professional Canadian football running back. He most recently played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the BC Lions. After being traded to the Edmonton Eskimos, he became the seventh Canadian running back since 1955 and the first since 2000 to rush for over 1,000 yards while also winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian Award. Messam played college football for Graceland University.

Thomas DeMarco is a former professional Canadian football quarterback. He played for the BC Lions, Ottawa Redblacks and the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Sam Willis Scarber is a former American football fullback in the National Football League for the San Diego Chargers. He played college football at the University of New Mexico and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1971 NFL Draft.

Marion Grice is a former Canadian football running back. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Arizona State.

Stephen Jones is a former American football wide receiver who played ten seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos and Ottawa Rough Riders. He played college football at Central Michigan University. Jones was a member of the Edmonton Eskimos team that won the 75th Grey Cup. Michael Burton is an American football fullback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Rutgers, and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Aaron Milton is a Canadian football running back for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the second round of the 2014 CFL Draft. He played CIS football at the University of Toronto and attended Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario.

Waymon Alridge is a former professional Canadian football wide receiver and slotback who played for the Calgary Stampeders, Ottawa Rough Riders, and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. From 1983 to 1986, Alridge played in 29 regular season games, mostly with the Rough Riders. He made 95 catches for 1,674 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns over the course of his career.
