GeoReader is a landmark locating software application and website for mobile iPhone and Android based devices. Users travel into the vicinity of a "talking point", and the software enables the phone to read text aloud that is linked with a GPS location. [1] In addition, users can create their own 200 character count text to add to the database, and choose to share these talking points publicly or privately. [2] [3] The system is hands free and requires no physical interaction. [3] Once the app is installed in the mobile device, the user simply opens the app and starts their trip. The application automatically then starts to search for any GPS tagged talking points within range of the user. [4]
GeoReader had over 120,000 talking points loaded into the database at launch. [5] It is linked to one of the largest databases of historical marker text and their GPS coordinates in the United States. [6] The application database contains a high percentage of markers for states such as Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Oregon and Michigan. It includes Pennsylvania's entire historical roadside marker collection and other points of interest in the rest of the US and Canada. [5] Using crowd sourcing, the GeoReader database is intended to grow with user input, and is marketed free for this purpose. [7] User created topics are not limited to only landmarks, but could be of any interesting fact, famous past event or point of interest associated with a location. [8] One can view the number of times their talking points has been read by exporting a comma-separated-values (CSV) file for analysis. [9] Talking points can also be created or changed using Google Maps on the website, www.mygeoreader.com. [4]
Talking points created with the intention of advertising a business or service are charged a fee. [10] Advertisement is location specific, and users will only hear short advertising points when they are physically near the GPS coordinates of the talking point, for example, a retail location or an approaching exit on a highway. This type of targeted advertising ensures that the recipient of the information is at a precise location when the message is heard. [11]
GeoReader can be customized. It allows a user to increase or decrease the range of the talking point search. Shorter ranges are recommended when walking or biking. Longer ranges work well when traveling quickly past landmarks, such as on a highway. GeoReader is currently available only on Android OS, and works anywhere in the world. [11] [4]
GeoReader was created by David Moreau of Fayetteville, New York, and was launched on the Android Market in September 2010 and the iPhone market in June 2012. [12] It was a 2010 SMAATO Mobile Advertising Awards Nominee, and a finalist in the 2010 European Satellite Navigation Competition. Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called geocaches or caches, at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. The first geocache was placed in 2000, and by 2023 there were over 3 million active caches worldwide.

LBS also includes personalized weather services and even location-based games.

Navizon was an early developer of technology that makes it possible to determine the geographic position of a mobile device using as reference the location of cell phone towers and Wi-Fi-based wireless access points instead of GPS. Navizon also developed technology for locating mobile devices indoors with room and floor-level accuracy.
Tourism Radio is a travel technology company based in Cape Town, South Africa, which produces location-based technology used in customized GPS in-car devices and IOS and Android mobile applications. The technology allows the user to take a tour of a city or pre-defined area, with geo-located, pre-recorded audio travel information triggering automatically as the user approaches them. The Tourism Radio in-car device plugs into a standard vehicle cigarette lighter and broadcasts a selection of local and international music along with location-specific travel information about the area the vehicle is driving through. Currently, there are approximately 3,300 of these devices used in South Africa, Namibia, New Zealand and Angola. Distribution of the devices to tourists is done in partnership with local Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs) and car/motorhome rental agencies. The iOS and Android applications do not broadcast a selection of music, but use the same geo-location principle to give the user relevant travel information about the area they are in. This includes information about a general area or suburb, as well as information about specific points of interest, such as museums, art galleries, historical attractions, restaurants, nature walks, beaches, etc.
Foursquare City Guide, commonly known as Foursquare, is a local search-and-discovery mobile app developed by Foursquare Labs Inc. The app provides personalized recommendations of places to go near a user's current location based on users' previous browsing history and check-in history.
GeoVector Corporation began conducting research into augmented reality in early 1990s. The company, co-founded by John Ellenby, who also founded laptop pioneer GRiD Systems Corporation, devised a method to use sensors in a device to associate relevant digital information with places on earth.

Waze Mobile Ltd, doing business as Waze, formerly FreeMap Israel, is a subsidiary company of Google that provides satellite navigation software on smartphones and other computers that support the Global Positioning System (GPS). In addition to turn-by-turn navigation, it incorporates user-submitted travel times and route details while downloading location-dependent information over a cellular network. Waze describes its application as a community-driven initiative that is free to download and use.
Junaio was an augmented reality browser designed for 3G and 4G mobile devices. It was developed by Munich-based company Metaio GmbH. It provided a Creator application and an API for developers and content providers to generate mobile Augmented Reality experiences for end-users. The smartphone app, for Android and iPhone platforms, and API were free to use.

The service is also available in Google Earth. There are mobile apps for Android and iPhone. The product has more than 11M members, is offered in many languages and has more than 37.9M tracks of dozens of activities in many countries and territories. Wikiloc began as a worldwide online reference for hiking. Additionally, photographs on Wikiloc enabled automated content analysis to characterize the landscape in the Ebro Delta Natural Park, Spain.

The application was first released in September 2012 and utilized user location and various databases to provide information and recommendations about various points of interest in their surroundings.
