Geof Bartz (born December 3, 1943) is an American documentary film editor, producer, and educator noted for his work on Pumping Iron . [1] [2] [3] He has edited four films that have won Academy Awards.
Bartz grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Notre Dame where he majored in biology before discovering film. [1] [3] After graduating, he went to Columbia University where he received an M.F.A. in film and later became an adjunct professor. [3]
Bartz has edited or supervised the editing of more than 100 non-fiction films, including the documentary Pumping Iron . [4] [1]
He has edited four Academy Award-winning films: King Gimp, Big Mama, Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 , and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness . Three other movies he cut received Academy Award nominations: Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth, Poster Girl, and Prison Terminal. He has also won four Emmys. [5] [6]

Founded in 1950, American Cinema Editors (ACE) is an honorary society of film editors who are voted in based on the qualities of professional achievements, their education of others, and their dedication to editing. Members use the post-nominal letters "ACE". The organization's "Eddie Awards" are routinely covered in trade magazines such as The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. The society is not an industry union, such as the I.A.T.S.E., to which an editor might also belong. The current president of ACE is Kevin Tent, who was elected in 2020.

In an industry where women accounted for only 16 per cent of all editors working on the top 250 films of 2004, and 80 per cent of the films had absolutely no women on their editing teams at all, Coates thrived as a top film editor. She was awarded BAFTA's highest honour, a BAFTA Fellowship, in February 2007 and was given an Academy Honorary Award, which are popularly known as a Lifetime Achievement Oscar, in November 2016 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
King Gimp is a 1999 documentary that was awarded the 2000 Oscar for Best Short Subject Documentary and 2000 Peabody Award. King Gimp follows the life of artist Dan Keplinger of Towson, Maryland, who has cerebral palsy. Filmmakers Susan Hannah Hadary and William A. The film is produced by Tina Brown and Sheila Nevins in collaboration with HBO Documentary Films. A Girl in the River was edited by Geof Bartz, A.C.E. The documentary earned widespread critical acclaim. A Girl in the River was shortlisted with ten other documentaries from 74 entries submitted to 88th Academy Awards in Documentary Short Subject category, which it won.
