The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) was formed in 1902 and is the third oldest athletic conference in the United States. Its current commissioner is Sarah Otey. Former commissioners include Mike Cleary, who was the first General Manager of a professional basketball team to hire an African American head coach, and would later run the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The Ohio Athletic Conference competes in the NCAA's Division III. Through the years, 31 schools have been members of the OAC. The enrollments of the current ten member institutions range from around 1,000 to 4,500. Member teams are located in Ohio.
The University of Mount Union is a private university in Alliance, Ohio. Founded in 1846, the university was affiliated with the Methodist Church until the spring of 2019. In the fall of 2020, Mount Union had an enrollment of 1,958 undergraduate and 220 graduate students.

Paul O. Bixler was an American football player, coach, and administrator and basketball coach. Larry Kehres is a former American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at the University of Mount Union—formerly known as Mount Union College—in Alliance, Ohio for 27 seasons, from 1986 to 2012. Kehres retired from coaching in May 2013 with a record of 332–24–3 as head coach of the Mount Union Purple Raiders football team, and a winning percentage of .929, the highest in college football history. Kehres also has the most national titles, conference titles (23), and unbeaten regular seasons (21) of any coach in college football history. His Purple Raiders set the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football record for most consecutive victories with 55, running from 2000 to 2003. He was succeeded as head football coach by his son, Vince. The elder Kehres was also the athletic director at Mount Union from 1985 to 2020. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
The Mount Union Purple Raiders football program represents the University of Mount Union in college football at the NCAA Division III level as members of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Mount Union have played their home games at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio since 1913, which makes it the oldest college football stadium in Ohio. The Purple Raiders have claimed 13 NCAA Division III Football Championship and 34 OAC titles and have 12 undefeated seasons.
The John Carroll Blue Streaks football program is the intercollegiate American football team for John Carroll University located in the U.S. state of Ohio. They compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division III level and are members of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Matthew Allen Campbell is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at Iowa State University, a position he has held since the 2016 season. Campbell grew up in Ohio and briefly attended the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to Mount Union, where he played defensive line.
Vincent G. Kehres is an American football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator at University of Toledo, a position he has held since 2020. Kehres served as the head football coach at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio from 2013 to 2019. In seven seasons at the helm of the Mount Union Purple Raiders football program, he compiled a record of 95–6 and led Mount Union to two NCAA Division III Football Championship titles, in 2015 and 2017. Kehres is the son of College Football Hall of Fame inductee Larry Kehres, who preceded him as head football coach at Mount Union.
Jason Tyler Candle is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at the University of Toledo, a position he had held since the 2016 season. Candle had been an assistant at Toledo since 2009, and at Mount Union before that. He played as a wide receiver at Mount Union and Geneva.
Dean Paul is an American college football coach. He was the head football coach at Ohio Northern University from 2004 to 2023. Paul served in the same capacity at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Kentucky from 1999 to 2003. A native of Garrettsville, Ohio, he played college football as a running back at Mount Union College—now known as the University of Mount Union—from 1987 to 1990.

They qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs and advanced to the national championship team, defeating the St. John's (MN) Johnnies, 10–7.
