George Bezecny (born March 24, 1963) is an American former professional tennis player. [1]
Bezecny was raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by parents George Sr and Dagmar, who were both natives of Czechoslovakia. His mother fled the communist country as a 17-year old by skiing down a mountain infested with mines until she reached the American zone, while his father came to the United States to pursue a medical career. An All-American tennis player at the University of Georgia, Bezecny was a member of the team's 1985 NCAA Division I championship winning team (playing No. 2 singles) and also reached the final of the singles championship that year, which he lost to teammate Mikael Pernfors, Georgia's No. 1 singles player. Bezecny is recorded as having a career high singles ranking of 308 in the world. His best performances on the ATP Tour (then Grand Prix circuit) were second round appearances at Indianapolis in 1985 and Prague in 1987. He managed to take a set off world number seven Miloslav Mečíř at the 1988 Lipton Championships. [4] On three occasions he featured in the qualifying draw at Wimbledon and he had a win over Sandon Stolle in the qualifiers for the 1993 US Open.
During his career he had to overcome a serious kidney disorder. [4]
Bezecny is a friend of Jack Nicklaus and has been known to compete with the former champion golfer as his doubles partner in tennis tournaments. [5]
Mats Arne Olof Wilander is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player. From 1982 to 1988, he won seven major singles titles, and one major men's doubles title. His breakthrough came suddenly and unexpectedly when he won the 1982 French Open at the age of 17.

Miloslav Mečíř is a Slovak former professional tennis player. He won the men's singles gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, representing Czechoslovakia, and contested two major singles finals. In 1987 he won the WCT Finals, the season-ending championship for the World Championship Tennis tour. His son Miloslav Jr. is also a former professional tennis player.
Mikael Pernfors is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. He reached the men's singles final at the French Open in 1986, and won the 1993 Canadian Open in Montreal.
Joakim "Jocke" Nyström is a former top ten ranked tennis player from Sweden who won 13 singles titles during his professional career. The right-hander reached his highest singles ranking on the ATP Tour on 31 March 1986, when he was ranked world No. 7. He was also ranked world No. 4 in doubles that same year.

Bryan Shelton is an American college tennis coach and former professional tennis player. Shelton played collegiately for Georgia Tech from 1985 to 1988, and then played professionally from 1989 to 1997. He subsequently returned to his alma mater to coach the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women's tennis team, which won the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship in 2007. He is currently the head coach of the Florida Gators men's tennis team of the University of Florida, where he coached the Gators to winning the 2021 NCAA Championship. He is the only head coach to have won a national championship in both men and women's NCAA Division I Tennis.

It was the 3rd edition of the Miami Masters and was part of the 1987 Nabisco Grand Prix and the 1987 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. The tournament moved from the previous venue in Boca West, Florida and took place at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida in the United States from February 23 through March 9, 1987. Miloslav Mečíř and Steffi Graf won the singles titles.

It was the 10th edition of the tournament and was held from 13 July until 19 July 1987. First-seeded Miloslav Mečíř won the singles title.
