George Halcovage III is an American college basketball coach, currently the head men's coach for the Buffalo Bulls men's basketball team. [2] [3]

Playing career

From 2004 to 2008, Halcovage played college basketball at Babson. [4] [5]

Coaching career

Halcovage joined Jay Wright at Villanova in 2008 as a graduate assistant and occupied various roles including video coordinator and director of basketball operations until 2017 when he was elevated to an assistant coach. [6] Upon Wright's retirement in 2022, Halcovage was retained as an assistant coach under Kyle Neptune. During his time with the Wildcats, he was part of seven Big East regular-season champion squads as well as four Final Four teams, including the 2016 and 2018 national championship teams.

On March 31, 2023, Halcovage was hired as head coach at Buffalo to replace Jim Whitesell. [2] [7] [8] [9] [5]

The Buffalo Bulls men's basketball team represents the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, United States. The team currently competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level as a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division. Buffalo began play in 1915 and joined the MAC in 1998. They won their first MAC East Division title in 2009, and won a third MAC East Division title in 2015 along with their first outright MAC Regular-Season championship and first MAC Tournament title to earn the program's first bid to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. The Bulls also have six appearances in the NCAA College Division Basketball Championship between 1957 and 1965 and two appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Their head coach position was filled on March 30, 2023 when Buffalo hired Villanova associate head coach George Halcovage.

Jim Whitesell is an American college basketball coach who is an assistant coach for the Albany Great Danes men's basketball team.Prior to Albany, he was the head men's coach for the Buffalo Bulls. Previously he coached at the Division I level as a head coach at Loyola University Chicago and an assistant at St. John's and Saint Louis. Whitesell replaced Larry Farmer as head coach of the Ramblers on April 14, 2004. Whitesell was fired as head coach of the Ramblers on March 14, 2011, after seven seasons, posting a 109–106 record in that time. Whitesell was hired in August 2013 as an assistant coach at St. John's to fill the void left by former director of basketball operations Moe Hicks. On April 16, 2015, he was named associate head coach of men's basketball at the University at Buffalo. On April 6, 2019, Whitesell was named the 14th head coach of men's basketball at the University at Buffalo, filling the void left by Nate Oats when he resigned to take the head coach position at the University of Alabama. On March 11, 2023, after four seasons and a 70–49 record he was fired as the Buffalo head coach. He was named an assistant coach at Albany on September 14, 2023.

The 2021–22 Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team represented Villanova University in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Led by head coach Jay Wright in his 21st and final year of coaching, the Wildcats played their home games at the Finneran Pavilion on the school's campus in the Philadelphia suburb of Villanova, Pennsylvania and Wells Fargo Center as members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 30–8, 16–4 in Big East play to finish in second place. They defeated St. John's, UConn, and Creighton to win the Big East tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 2 seed in the South region. The team began participating in TBT in 2021, reaching the semi-finals. Blue Collar U won its first TBT championship in its second year of participation in 2022, winning the $1 million grand prize.

They finished the season 15–17, 9–9 in MAC play to finish in a tie for sixth place. As the No. 6 seed in the MAC tournament they lost to Akron in the quarterfinals.

The Bulls, led by first-year head coach George Halcovage III, played their home games at Alumni Arena in Amherst, New York as members of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 4–27, 2–16 in MAC play, to finish in last place. They failed to qualify for the MAC tournament.
