Dwayne Jerome Stephens (born July 19, 1971) [1] is an American basketball coach who is currently the men's head coach for the Western Michigan Broncos. Previously, he was an assistant and associate head coach at Michigan State for 19 years. [2]
Stephens played basketball at Michigan State from 1989 to 1993 under Spartan legend Jud Heathcote. [3] He was a four-year letter winner for the Spartans and was a third-team Basketball Weekly's Freshman All-America Team. In his junior year, he averaged 11.2 points and five rebounds. In his senior season, he was co-captain for the Spartans and averaged 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. [4] He was named to Basketball Weekly's Honorable Mention All-Midwest Team. He played three professional seasons in Europe. [5]
Stephens began his coaching career as an assistant for two season at Oakland from 1997 to 1999. He then joined former Tom Izzo assistant Tom Crean at Marquette and went to the Final Four in 2003 with Marquette star Dwyane Wade. [5] Stephens then joined his alma mater, Michigan State and its Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo, as an assistant in 2003. [6] He was named associate head coach in 2012. [7]
On April 4, 2022, Stephens, who had been considered for the position in 2020, [2] accepted the head coaching position at Western Michigan. [8]

Thomas Michael Izzo ; born January 30, 1955) is an American college basketball coach who has been the head coach at Michigan State University since 1995. On April 4, 2016, Izzo was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
George Melvin "Jud" Heathcote was an American basketball player and coach. He was a college basketball head coach for 24 seasons: five at the University of Montana (1971–1976) and nineteen at Michigan State University (1976–1995). Heathcote coached Magic Johnson during his two years at Michigan State, concluding with the 1979 national championship season. He also coached the University of Montana to a national handball championship in 1974.
Frederick Douglas Wojcik is an American college basketball coach, former player, and former Naval officer. Currently, he is the Associate Head Coach for Tom Izzo at Michigan State University. An NCAA Division I head coach for nine years, Wojcik has averaged 20 wins per season while compiling an overall record of 178–121 (.595), and an overall conference record of 88–58 (.602). He is the winningest coach in the history of the University of Tulsa. He is a native of Wheeling, West Virginia.
Thomas Aaron Crean is a college basketball coach. Most recently, he was the head coach for the University of Georgia men's basketball team. Crean was previously the head coach of Indiana University. Prior to that, he served as head coach at Marquette University (1999–2008), where his team reached the 2003 NCAA Final Four.
Dane Fife is an American former college basketball player and assistant coach. Fife is the former head coach of the Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Mastodons men's basketball team and a former college assistant coach at Michigan State University under Tom Izzo for ten years before leaving to become an assistant coach at his alma mater, Indiana University. He was let go by Indiana after one season.
The Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team is the intercollegiate men's basketball program representing Michigan State University. The head coach was Tom Izzo who was in his 12th year. The team played home games at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan. MSU finished the season 23–12, 8–8 in Big Ten play to finish in a tie for seventh place. The Spartans received their tenth consecutive bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the Second Round to North Carolina.
Mark Allen Montgomery is an American college basketball head coach for the Detroit Mercy Titans. He previously was the head men's basketball coach at Northern Illinois University. Montgomery replaced Ricardo Patton as head coach of the Huskies on March 24, 2011. Prior to being named the head coach at NIU, he was an assistant to head coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State for 10 seasons, the last four as associate head coach. The Spartans reached the NCAA tournament in each of Montgomery's 10 seasons on the staff, including three Final Four appearances and a trip to the title game in 2009.

As the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region, they were upset by No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee in what is considered to be one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history.

This marked the school's 25th straight selection to the NCAA tournament making it the third longest streak, second longest active streak, and the longest streak by a coach in men's basketball ever. The Spartans defeated USC and Marquette to advance to their first Sweet Sixteen since 2019. There they lost to Kansas State.
