George Oywello (17 January 1939 - 1965) [1] was a Ugandan boxer. Born in Gulu, Uganda, Oywello competed for Uganda in both the 1960 Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. In 1964 boxing in the heavyweight competition he was beaten by eventual gold medal winner, Joe Frazier. [1] He died in a car accident in 1965.

In the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, Oywello won a gold medal in the heavyweight competition beating New Zealander, Bill Kini in the final. [2]
The 1964 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XVIII Olympiad and commonly known as Tokyo 1964, were an international multi-sport event held from 10 to 24 October 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo had been awarded the organization of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor was subsequently passed to Helsinki due to Japan's invasion of China, before ultimately being cancelled due to World War II. Frazier reigned as the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1970 to 1973 and as an amateur won a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Edward Blay was a Ghanaian boxer. He competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the light welterweight (63.5 kg) category in 1964. Blay was a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, in 1962 and 1966,and amateur boxer from the late 50s to 1968, and later briefly fought as a professional boxer. He lived in Italy for some time, and after returning to Ghana established the Sole Mio restaurant at Osu, Accra.
Joe Darkey is a former Ghanaian professional boxer who competed in the 1960s. A middleweight he competed in Boxing at the 1964 Summer Olympics - Middleweight, but was defeated in the third round. However two years later in 1966 he participated in the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and won a gold medal.
Valeri Vladimirovich Popenchenko was a Soviet Olympic boxer who competed in the middleweight division (−75 kg). During his career he won 200 out of 213 bouts; he won an Olympic gold medal in 1964 and European titles in 1963 and 1965. He was named the Outstanding Boxer of the 1964 Olympics and given the Val Barker Trophy, becoming the only Soviet boxer to receive the honour. Popenchenko was known for his exceptional skills and agility in the ring, as well as his strong left hook.

David Kieran Nyika is a New Zealand professional boxer. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at both the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as competing at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. Nyika and Sarah Hirini were the New Zealand flag bearers at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Nyika gained significant media attention after an incident during the Round of 16 at the 2020 Summer Olympics in which Moroccan boxer Youness Baalla attempted to bite Nyika's ear.

Robert H. Christopherson is an American boxer. He competed in the men's light heavyweight event at the 1964 Summer Olympics. At the 1964 Summer Olympics, he defeated Barkat Ali of Pakistan in Round 32, before losing to Aleksei Kiselyov of the Soviet Union in Round 16 by referee decision. His teammate on the 1964 US Boxing Team, Joe Frazier, went on to win the only Summer 1964 Olympic boxing gold medal for the US.
