George Henry Rowdon, [1] born at Midsomer Norton,Somerset on 6 October 1914,and died in Bath in February 1987,played in one first-class cricket match for Somerset in the 1936 season.
An amateur right-handed middle-order batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler,Rowdon was picked for the Somerset match against Essex at Colchester. He made 9 and 2 as Somerset were beaten by an innings,the match finishing soon after lunch on the second day. [2] He did not bowl in the match.
Rowdon was recorded at his birth and in the Wisden report of his single first-class appearance as "Rowden",but according to a website covering the Rowden family,"George Henry Rowdon" was born in Midsomer Norton in 1914,died in 1987,and this has subsequently been adopted as the more correct version of his name by CricketArchive. Midsomer Norton is a town near the Mendip Hills in Bath and North East Somerset,England,10 miles (16 km) south-west of Bath,10 miles (16 km) north-east of Wells,10 miles (16 km) north-west of Frome,12 miles (19 km) west of Trowbridge and 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Bristol. Edward Stephen Massey Poyntz was an English first-class cricketer,who played for Somerset in the early twentieth century. An amateur,Poyntz was an aggressive right-handed batsman. He generally played as part of the middle order,and though his batting was not exceptional,he was highly praised for his fielding ability. He captained Somerset in the two years prior to the First World War.
Reginald Addington Ingle,known as "Reggie",was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Somerset from 1923 to 1939 and captained the side from 1932 to 1937. Ingle also played cricket for Cambridge University,but failed to win a blue. He was born at Bodmin,Cornwall and died at Bath,Somerset.
Bruce de la Coeur Hylton-Stewart was a musician and schoolteacher who played first-class cricket for Somerset and Cambridge University between 1912 and 1914.
Hubert Hunt,born at Long Ashton,Somerset,on 18 November 1911,and died at Pill,Somerset on 29 November 1985,played in 11 first-class cricket matches for Somerset in the 1936 season.
Frederick Lewis Pratten,born on 13 February 1904 at Midsomer Norton,Somerset,England,where he also died on 23 February 1967,was a cricketer who played 12 first-class matches for Somerset in 1930 and 1931.
Archibald Young,known as "Tom",was a professional first-class cricket player who appeared for Somerset in more than 300 matches. Though a regular cricketer for a dozen years,he was frequently in poor health because of damage to his lungs during the First World War and he died at the age of 45,less than three years after his most successful cricket season.
Albert Dudley Eric Rippon played 31 first-class cricket matches for Somerset,all but one of them in the 1914 and 1919 seasons on either side of the First World War. In many of his first-class matches,he opened the batting with his identical twin brother,Sydney Rippon.
