Gerard Sutton is an Australian ophthalmic surgeon and ophthalmologist in Australia and New Zealand. His specialty is laser vision correction, cataract and lens surgery, and corneal transplantation.

Education

Sutton graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales. [1] After completing his ophthalmic training at Sydney Eye Hospital, he completed advanced surgical training at St Thomas’ and Moorfields Eye Hospitals in London. [2] He followed this with a fellowship in laser vision correction surgery at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany in 1996. [3]

Career and research

In 2010, Sutton became the inaugural Professor of Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the Sydney Eye Hospital and the University of Sydney. [4] Here he established and continues to supervise the first university degree in the world for refractive vision correction surgery training. [5] [6] He also holds a clinical associate professor position at Auckland University. [7] He continues to see patients as a partner at Vision Eye Institute, Chatswood. [8] In late 2013, Sutton co-authored a book, “The Naked Eye”, with Dr Michael Lawless. The book provided an overview of laser refractive and lens surgery options for prospective patients and health practitioners in optometry and ophthalmology. [9]

He has developed local and international collaborative research relationships across ophthalmology and medical science. Recently with Professor Gordon Wallace of the University of Wollongong, the team developed a novel treatment for the repair of corneal wounds. [10] This technology has several opportunities within ophthalmology and the potential to address wound healing throughout the body. As recognition of the invention’s potential, Gerard Sutton and the team secured several significant grants in excess of $1M, including from New South Wales Health Big Idea and NSW Medical Device Fund grants. Gerard Sutton’s involvement in the Myanmar Eye Care Project has been pivotal in helping to develop the community ophthalmic and corneal transplant service in Myanmar and represents an ongoing commitment to development of ophthalmic services in third-world countries. This work was recognised in receiving the XOVA Excellence in Ophthalmology award in 2015 for developing the service in Myanmar. [13] By overseeing the training and development of local ophthalmologists and alongside the organisation of continued government and education support, the program has become self-sufficient tripling the amount of corneal surgical procedures in less than a decade. [14]

He has performed over 20,000 surgical procedures in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. [8] Sutton has lectured continually on a wide variety of topics within ophthalmology both at home and abroad. In 2018 he was won the individual and team gold medals at the Cataract Olympic Marathon session at the World Ophthalmology Conference in Barcelona, Spain. [15] He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters. [16] He has co-authored two books on Keratoconus and Refractive Surgery. [17] He was the Chief Ophthalmologist for the 2000 Olympics. [4]

The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. Refractive eye surgeries are used to treat common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism.

The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) is an Australian medical research institute affiliated with the University of Western Australia. It was established in 1983 with support of the Lions Clubs of Western Australia and headquartered in the Perth suburb of Nedlands, Western Australia. The LEI is a not-for-profit centre of excellence that combines an ophthalmic clinic with scientific discovery developing techniques for the prevention of blindness and the reduction of pain from blinding eye conditions.

Avi Wallerstein is a Canadian ophthalmologist and laser eye surgeon who specializes in surgical vision correction, also termed refractive eye surgery. He practises in Montreal and Toronto. In 2001, he co-founded LASIK MD with Mark Cohen. LASIK MD is Canada's largest provider of laser refractive surgery, performing over 60,000 procedures a year. He is one of only 14 certified CLasik instructors in North America.

Stephen Updegraff, M.D., FACS is an American refractive surgeon best known for his early involvement in, and contributions to, LASIK. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a board-certified member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a founding member of the American College of Ophthalmic Surgeons, and a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Pine Ridge Eye Study Society. Updegraff currently serves as the medical director of Updegraff Vision in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Jeff Machat MD, FRCSC, DABO is an ophthalmologist in the United States and Canada specializing in surgical vision correction better known as refractive eye surgery.

Peter S. Hersh is an American ophthalmologist, researcher, and specialist in LASIK eye surgery, keratoconus, and diseases of the cornea. He co-authored the article in the journal Ophthalmology that presented the results of the study that led to the first approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the excimer laser for the correction of nearsightedness in the United States. Hersh was also medical monitor of the study that led to approval of corneal collagen crosslinking for the treatment of keratoconus. He was the originator, in 2015, of CTAK for keratoconus, patent holder, and co-developer.

Raymond Mark Stein, MD, FRCSC, DABO, is a Canadian ophthalmologist. He practices refractive and cataract surgery. He is the medical director of the Bochner Eye Institute in Toronto, Ontario and Chief of Ophthalmology at the Scarborough General Hospital.

Sheraz Daya is a British ophthalmologist. Daya founded the Centre for Sight in 1996, and works in stem-cell research and sight restoration and correction surgery.

Jeewan Singh Titiyal is an Indian ophthalmologist, credited with the first live cornea transplant surgery by an Indian doctor. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of medicine.

Post-LASIK ectasia is a condition similar to keratoconus where the cornea starts to bulge forwards at a variable time after LASIK, PRK, or SMILE corneal laser eye surgery. However, the physiological processes of post-LASIK ectasia seem to be different from keratoconus. The visible changes in the basal epithelial cell and anterior and posterior keratocytes linked with keratoconus were not observed in post-LASIK ectasia.

Berthold Seitz is a German ophthalmologist, professor and director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, Saarland. He is known for his scientific contributions in the fields of cornea transplantation, cataract surgery and artificial lens-calculation after refractive corneal surgery as well as techniques of amniotic membrane transplantation and its histological integration patterns in the cornea.

Burkhard Dick is a German ophthalmologist who has specialized in refractive and cataract surgery. With his many contributions to the scientific literature on this topic, he is considered one of the pioneers of employing the femtosecond laser in cataract surgery. Allon Barsam is a London-based ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, refractive surgery and corneal and external eye disease. Barsam carried out the first human treatments of microwave keratoplasty.

The Myanmar Eye Care Project (MECP) is focused on improving the delivery of critical eye care services to at-risk populations in Myanmar. Founded in 2002 and staffed entirely by ophthalmologists, it aims to end blindness in Myanmar. Myanmar is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia and has the highest rate of blindness in the world. Working with partners and a network of providers, MECP operates clinics that provide routine eye care, acute treatment, and surgeries to Myanmar's poor rural populations. MECP also builds eye care infrastructure in rural communities, trains indigenous physicians and nursing staff, and provides equipment.

Anastasios John Kanellopoulos is a Greek-American eye surgeon specializing in corneal transplantation, cornea crosslinking for keratoconus, complicated cataract surgery and complicated glaucoma. Widely known for research and clinical contributions in micro-incision cataract, customized laser refractive surgery and corneal cross-linking propagation and most innovations, reducing corneal transplants for advanced keratoconus.
