Franz Xaverius Senn was an Austrian priest and mountaineer who was among the first to promote alpinism and foster the early development of mountaineering in Tyrol. His concern for the poverty of his parishioners led him to encourage tourism into the Stubaital and Ötztal valleys. Senn was a founding member of the Austrian and German alpine associations. The Franz Senn Hütte and the Sennkogel are named in his honour. Senn's passion for mountaineering led to his ascent of numerous 3,000-metre summits throughout the Ötztal Alps.

The Wittgenstein Award is an Austrian science award supporting the notion that "scientists should be guaranteed the greatest possible freedom and flexibility in the performance of their research." The Wittgenstein-Preis is named after the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and is conferred once per year by the Austrian Science Fund on behalf of the Austrian Ministry for Science.

Ingeborg J. Hochmair-Desoyer is an Austrian electrical engineer and the CEO and CTO of hearing implant company MED-EL. Dr Hochmair and her husband Prof. Erwin Hochmair co-created the first micro-electronic multi-channel cochlear implant in the world. She received the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for her contributions towards the development of the modern cochlear implant. She also received the 2015 Russ Prize for bioengineering.

Helmut Gams (1893–1976) was a central European botanist. Born in Brno, he moved to Zürich as a child. He studied at the University of Zurich, being awarded a PhD in 1918. During his career, he worked at the University of Munich and the University of Innsbruck. His research saw him pursue fieldwork around Europe and Asia. He was a geobotanist who specialized in the associations of different species of mosses and lichens with each other and the environment. Gams coined the terms 'biocoenology' and 'phytocoenology' in his 1918 PhD thesis.

Maria Kuhnert-Brandstätter, was an Austrian pharmacist trained in pharmacognosy and known for her research on thermomicroscopy, and her microchemical investigations of natural and synthetic drug substances.
