Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute (sometimes called justGibbs Cancer Center or, more simply, Gibbs) is a cancer treatment and research facility in Upstate South Carolina. Gibbs Cancer Center is associated with the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program and the Medical University of South Carolina. [1] Gibbs has several locations across the upstate of South Carolina, including Comprehensive Cancer Centers at both Spartanburg Medical Center and Pelham Medical Center. Additional infusion facilities are located in Gaffney, Union, Mary Black and North Grove.

In addition, Gibbs Cancer Center has ten multidisciplinary treatment programs for each of the specific types of cancer (Breast, Cutaneous, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Gynecologic, Endocrine, Head and Neck, Hematologic, Neural and Thoracic). Selected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to participate in the Community Clinical Oncology Program, Gibbs is the only NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) in the Carolinas. [2]
Gibbs has professional patient navigators. A navigator is a specially trained registered nurse, often with advanced degrees and certifications, plus years of experience in cancer care, who is the continuous point of contact for the patient and their family throughout their cancer diagnosis, treatment and survival planning. Gibbs Cancer Center established its navigator program in 1998.
Gibbs Cancer is one of 12 community cancer centers to earn the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ 2011 Innovator Awards, [3] in recognition of survivorship program. Gibbs was named the first Hospital of the Future by the U.S. Department of Defense. [4] In 2013, the medical oncology practice (Medical Group of the Carolinas – Hematology Oncology) won Gibbs another ACCC Innovator Award, this time for the integration of palliative care information.
John Fleming established the Spartanburg Cancer Clinic in 1934, and the clinic received national accreditation in 1938. [5] [6] Jay Bearden and Julian Josey initiated the concept of the current cancer center in 1976 by convincing administrators at Spartanburg Regional Hospital to allow them to consolidate all existing cancer treatment and support services into a dedicated, single-floor unit, a coordinated-services approach that was virtually unheard of at the time. Bearden started the hosting of clinical trials in 1976, through collaboration with Wake Forest University. [7]
Gibbs Cancer Center, which opened its doors in 1999, was named for Jimmy and Marsha Gibbs, who had donated a $1.2 million lead gift toward establishing the center. [8]
Gibbs was selected to be an NCI-funded clinical oncology programs in 1983 and has been continuously funded by NCI for thirty years. Gibbs Cancer Center became an exclusive host affiliate of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005 and established the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health in 2008. The Center collaborated with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine to build a 7,500 square foot Clinical Oncology Laboratory in order to conduct research in the fields of personalized cancer treatment, colorectal cancer treatment, cancer stem cells and regenerative medicine. Gibbs Cancer Center opened a location in Gaffney, SC in 2011. [10] In addition, a new location was opened in 2013 in Greer, SC, on the same campus as Pelham Medical Center. [11]
The Greer location was expanded in 2020 with a seven-story, 191-square-foot expansion. This expanded facility is adjacent to Pelham Medical Center. The services available include surgical, medical and radiation oncology, oncology research and rehabilitation services, infusion services, CyberKnife, and genetic counseling. The facility includes centralized registration; a 120-seat conference center; a cafe; an outpatient pharmacy; a retail shop; laboratory services and a chapel. [12]

It is located at Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine in Hanover, New Hampshire. Its administrative offices are located within the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is a unique pan-European non-profit clinical cancer research organisation established in 1962 operating as an international association under Belgium law. It develops, conducts, coordinates and stimulates high-quality translational and clinical trial research to improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients. This is achieved through the development of new drugs and other innovative approaches, and the testing of more effective therapeutic strategies, using currently approved drugs, surgery and/or radiotherapy in clinical trials conducted under the auspices of a vast network of clinical cancer researchers supported by 220 staff members based in Brussels. The EORTC has the expertise to conduct large and complex trials especially specific populations such as the older patient and rare tumours.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System(SRHS) is one of South Carolina's largest healthcare systems. John E. Niederhuber was the 13th director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), from 2006 until July, 2010, succeeding Andrew von Eschenbach, who went on to become a director at biotechnology firm BioTime. A nationally renowned surgeon and researcher, Dr. Niederhuber has dedicated his four-decade career to the treatment and study of cancer - as a professor, cancer center director, National Cancer Advisory Board chair, external advisor to the NCI, grant reviewer, and laboratory investigator supported by NCI and the National Institutes of Health. He is now Executive Vice President/CEO Inova Translational Medicine Institute and Inova Health System and co-director, Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network.
Bernard Fisher was an American surgeon and a pioneer in the biology and treatment of breast cancer. He was a native of Pittsburgh. He was Chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His work established definitively that early-stage breast cancer could be more effectively treated by lumpectomy, in combination with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and/or hormonal therapy, than by radical mastectomy.

The Kimelman Cancer Institute is a facility specializing in the treatment and study of cancer; it is located in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Robert E. Wittes was Physician-in-Chief of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, from 2002 until December 31, 2012. Prior to his appointment at MSKCC, he was Deputy Director for Extramural Sciences and Director of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis at the National Cancer Institute, where he oversaw NCI's extramural clinical and basic research programs, including the evaluation of new therapeutics, diagnostics, and translational research. Wittes is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Federation for Medical Research. In addition to his institutional affiliations, Dr. Wittes has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and Oncology. He has served on the editorial boards of Clinical Cancer Research, Current Opinion in Oncology, The American Journal of Clinical Oncology; Cancer Investigation, and The International Journal of Radiation Oncology-Biology & Physics, among others.
Eric P. Winer is a medical oncologist and clinical researcher specializing in breast cancer. He is director of Yale Cancer Center and president and physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital Yale New Haven Health System, effective February 1, 2022. He also is Deputy Dean for Cancer Research at Yale School of Medicine. From 1997 to 2021, he was the Chief of the Breast Oncology Program at Dana–Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Beginning in 2013, he held a range of institutional roles at Dana-Farber, including Chief of Clinical Development, the Thompson Chair in Breast Cancer Research and Director of the Dana-Farber/Harvard SPORE in Breast Cancer. He also served as a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He was president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2022-2023 and became Chair of the Board in mid-June 2023. His career has been focused on breast cancer treatment and research.
Julian C. Josey Jr. was a radiation oncologist at the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in Spartanburg, South Carolina. A native of Spartanburg, he had been a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for more than 40 years.
James D. Bearden III, M.D. F.A.C.P. is a native of South Carolina, a medical oncologist and current Vice President and Clinical Research & Physician Manager of the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Bearden is nationally recognized for his extensive involvement in the advancement of research and treatment for cancer.
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) is a cancer treatment and research center in Seattle, Washington.
