Gichki or Gitchki is a Rajput tribe [1] [2] living in the Makran region of Pakistan and Iran. [3] The tribe, initially settled in the Gichk valley of Panjgur and now mostly Balochi-speaking, formed ruling class of the state of Makran from 1740 until 1955. [4]

Origins

The ancestors of Gichki, stated to be Rajputs, appear to have arrived between the fifteenth–seventeenth centuries in Makran. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Marwar in Rajasthan, Jamnagar in Gujarat and Lahore in Punjab, and Sindh are suggested as their places of origin. They are said to have converted to Islam three generations after their arrival. [5] [6] [7] [8] Ethnically they are not of Baloch stock and instead have roots in the Indus Valley. [9] [10] [11] Since they were not pastoralists unlike the Baloch or as numerous as the already settled population of Makran, some scholars consider it likely that Gichki migrated as a group of mercenaries, and conquered Makran through diplomacy and by establishing alliances with the ruling families. [2] [12] The historian Fiorani Piacentini believes that the close association of Gichkis with Zikrism, a local heterodox sect, also played an important role in their rise to power. [13]

History

The political turmoil in Makran during the 17th and 18th centuries attracted several bands of raiders from the neighbouring regions; among them were Buledi, Gichki, and Nausherwanis, who later established their state in Kharan. According to a locally well-known tradition from Makran, the ancestors of Gichki were forty Rajput horsemen from north; in an alliance with Buledi, Gichki killed the then ruler of Kech, a certain Malik Mirza. Soon conflict broke out between the two tribes and Gichki ousted Buledi as well, hence gaining complete control over Makran. Fabietti considers the factuality of some of the details mentioned in this account uncertain, although he believes that the migration of Gichki Rajputs and the struggle between them and Buledi probably had a historical basis. [14]

Historically, Gichki appeared in Makran in the 16th century. They drove out Buledi after 1740 under their chief, Mulla Murad. Gichki were Zikris like Buledi, and Mulla Murad Gichki is considered one of the major Zikri figures. He organised Zikrism as a faith and chose Koh-e-Murad as its central pilgrimage site. During the rule of Murad's son Malik Dinar Gichki, Makran was invaded nine times by the Khan of Kalat, Nasir Khan Brahui and Gichki were forced to pay half of their revenue to him. The advent of British rule weakened the influence of Kalat, allowing Gichki Nawabs to assert their internal independence again. The last Nawab, Mir Baian Gichki acceded to Pakistan in 1947. [15] [9]

Social organization

Despite their origins, Gichki are considered members of the Baloch society and speak Balochi, a trend which they share with other ethnic groups of non-Baloch origins such as Jats, Lasi, Dihvar and Brahuis. [11] Gichki are divided into two major branches, Isazai and Dinarzai, which previously ruled Panjgur and Kech respectively. [7] They were initially Zikris, and only gradually converted to Sunni Islam after Mir Nasir Khan of Kalat undertook military campaigns against them. [10] Gichki castles in Kech were surveyed by Fiorani Piacentini et al. between 1987 and 1991, who described their architecture as a blend of Rajput heritage of Gichki Nawabs and the Persian culture followed by them. [16]

The Khanate of Kalat was a Brahui Khanate that originated in the modern-day Kalat region of Pakistan. Formed in 1666 due to the threat of Mughal expansion in the region, it controlled the wider Balochistan at its greatest extent in the mid-18th century, extending from Kerman in the west to Sindh in the east and from Helmand River in the north to the Arabian Sea in the south. The Khanate of Kalat lost considerable area to Qajar Iran and the Emirate of Afghanistan in the early 19th century, and the city of Kalat was itself sacked by the British in 1839.

Las Bela was a princely state in a subsidiary alliance with British India which existed until 1955. The state occupied an area of 18,254 km2 (7,048 sq mi) in the extreme southeast of the Balochistan region, with an extensive coastline on the Arabian Sea to the south. Las Bela was bordered by the princely states of Kalat and Makran to the north and west. To the east lay the province of Sind and to the southeast lay the Federal Capital Territory around the city of Karachi.

Makran was an autonomous princely state in a subsidiary alliance with British India until 1947, before being absorbed as an autonomous princely state of Pakistan. It ceased to exist in 1955. It was located in the extreme southwest of present-day Pakistan, an area now parts of the districts of Gwadar, Kech and Panjgur. The state did not include the enclave of Omani Gwadar, which was under Omani rule until 1958.

Bizenjo is an ethnic Brahui tribe inhabiting Balochistan, Pakistan. According to the official list by Mir Ahmad Yar, the last Khan of Kalat, Zehri was originally one of the Jatt tribes inhabiting the region; the other being Zehri and Mengal. Though the Bizenjo in eastern Makran are Brahui by origin, they have been Baluchified in language and customs due to a prolonged residence in Makran.

The Buledi or Buleidi is a Balochi-speaking tribe in the Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Balochistan. The tribe derives its name from the Buleida valley in Kech.

Paroom is a Tehsil in Panjgur District in Balochistan, Pakistan. The historical area of Parom was divided by the Goldsmith line, thus a small part of it falls in Iranian territory. According to local legend, it was also known as Gulshan, meaning 'rose garden'. The word parom means 'growth' in the Balochi language and is attributed to Parom due to its mild climate and the fertile soil which supports more than one crop per year. Today the region has two union councils, Parom and Koh Bun. The population numbers around 50,000 people.

Dost Mohammad Khan Baloch, also known as Mir Dost Muhammad Khan Baluch, was a ruler in Iranian (Western) Baluchistan from 1921 till 1928.

The 1898 Baloch uprising was a revolt that occurred in Balochistan, modern-day Pakistan. It was instigated by Sardar Mehrab Khan Gichki and Mir Baloch Khan Nousherwani.

Mugheri are a social group in Pakistan descended from Arabs. Sources claim the Mugheri are descended from a Field Marshal Mughera Bin Zaid Bin Hatim, who was appointed as a Field Marshal for Sindh by his elder brother and famous Governor of Sindh during Abbasid Caliphate named Daud Bin Zaid Bin Hatim. Daud was appointed as a Governor of Sindh in 800AD by Caliph Haroon-ur-Rashid (786-809). Governor Daud Bin Zaid Bin Hatim governed Sindh for the longest period of nine years and later his son Bashar Bin Daud Bin Hatim became the next successor Governor of Sindh during the caliphate of Mamoon-ur-Rashid. Additionally, the Mughera tribe was at the climax because they ran their business, trade, affairs and matters effectively and were considered as wealthy tribe under the Abbasid Caliphate.

The Lashari is a Baloch tribe, mainly residing in Derajat, Makran, Sindh, and the Kacchi Plain in east of Balochistan.

The Sindhis of Balochistan are an indigenous Sindhi population living in Balochistan, Pakistan.

Wadhela, Wadela is a Baloch tribe inhabiting the Makran division of Balochistan. They are one of the principal tribes in the Kulanch sub-tehsil of Pasni city in Gwadar. Wadhelas are originally said to be immigrants from the Wadh tehsil of Khuzdar district. They also inhabit the Kech district of Balochistan, where they were largely responsible for the '1898 Baloch uprising' of Gokprosh.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brahuistan (region)</span>

Brahuistan, also known as Brahvistan is a region in Balochistan in what are now Pakistan and Afghanistan primarily inhabited by the Brahuis, an ethnic group which natively speaks the Brahui language. In the twenty-first century, Brahui nationalism has been developed around the idea of a separate Brahuistan, consisting of Kalat in Pakistan and Registan in Afghanistan.
