Gilbert is the performance name of Matthew Gilbert Linley, a London-based composer and musician. He is also the drummer in Engineers with Mark Peters and Ulrich Schnauss. [1]

Biography

He began playing the drums at an early age and then went on to study classical music and composition at Oriel College, Oxford University and Goldsmiths College. [2] [ better source needed ] After a period of writing soundtracks for film and television he began writing under the Gilbert moniker.

Gilbert's eponymous debut album was released in 2007 on the independent record label Shifty Disco Records. [3] [ failed verification ] It received excellent reviews and extensive national radio airplay.[ citation needed ]

In 2010, Gilbert's album Wahoola! was released. About the new record Linley wrote: "I wanted Wahoola! to more obviously feature the talents of the people who have been performing the first album live.....especially Maud Waret's vocals and Brian Lee's violin-playing". [4]

2014 saw a new album and musical project named AztecCormorant.

In 2016, Linley collaborated with bandmate from Engineers, Mark Peters, on a new album and project entitled Salt Rush with Mark Peters . This album was released by the record label Pedigree Cuts (part of Warner/Chappell Production Music) [5] [ better source needed ]

Gilbert's music is performed live by five musicians playing an array of musical instruments. Gilbert has gigged extensively throughout the UK, including sets at the 2007 Green Man Festival, 2008 Brighton Loop, and 2009 Southbank Udderbelly.[ citation needed ] Gilbert also supported Mice Parade and Silje Nes in London, in October 2010. Engineers are a British shoegazing/dream pop band. The band was formed in London in 2003 by bassist/guitarist/keyboardist Mark Peters, singer/guitarist Simon Phipps, bassist/guitarist Dan MacBean, and drummer Andrew Sweeney. After the release of their second album Three Fact Fader in 2009, MacBean and Sweeney left the band, and were replaced by bassist/vocalist Daniel Land, drummer Matthew Linley, and keyboardist Ulrich Schnauss. Hank & Cupcakes are an Atlanta-based indie rock–pop duo formed in 2008 in Tel Aviv, Israel. The group consists of husband-and-wife Ariel "Hank" Scherbacovsky and Sagit "Cupcakes" Shir. They took their name as a reference to Hank Chinaski, the literary alter ego of American writer Charles Bukowski and one of his real-life lovers, Pamela "Cupcakes" Wood. Always Returning is the fourth full-length studio album by British shoegazing band Engineers, released on 11 August 2014 through the Kscope label. The album is the first to feature Mark Peters on lead vocals throughout, with the rest of the band consisting of Ulrich Schnauss and Matthew Linley. It is the first release not to include vocalist Simon Phipps. The album was preceded by a single, "Fight Or Flight", released on 28 July 2014, with a second single, "A Million Voices," out on 19 January 2015.

The EP was originally released via Juno Download on 7 October 2016, and featured an exclusive bonus track, ′Cloudsurfing .′ The bonus track was no longer available following the full release.
